عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ، عَنِ ابْنِ جُرَيْجٍ قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنِي عِكْرِمَةُ بْنُ خَالِدٍ،
أَنَّ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ، صَلَّى الْعِشَاءَ الْآخِرَةَ بِالْجَابِيَةِ، فَلَمْ يَقْرَأْ فِيهَا حَتَّى فَرَغَ، فَلَمَّا فَرَغَ دَخَلَ فَأَطَافَ بِهِ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ عَوْفٍ، وَتَنَحْنَحَ لَهُ حَتَّى سَمِعَ عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ حِسَّهُ، وَعَلِمَ أَنَّهُ ذُو حَاجَةٍ، فَقَالَ: " مَنْ هَذَا ؟ " قَالَ: عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ عَوْفٍ قَالَ: " أَلَكَ حَاجَةٌ ؟ " قَالَ: نَعَمْ، قَالَ: " فَادْخُلْ "، فَدَخَلَ، فَقَالَ: أَرَأَيْتَ مَا صَنَعْتَ آنِفًا عَهِدَهُ إِلَيْكَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ أَمْ رَأَيْتَهُ يَصْنَعُهُ ؟ قَالَ: " وَمَا هُوَ ؟ " قَالَ: لَمْ تَقْرَأْ فِي الْعِشَاءِ قَالَ: " أَوَفَعَلْتُ ؟ " قَالَ: نَعَمْ، قَالَ: " فَإِنِّي سَهَوْتُ، جَهَّزْتُ عِيرًا مِنَ الشَّامِ، حَتَّى قَدِمَتِ الْمَدِينَةَ "، قَالَ: مَنِ الْمُؤَذِّنُ ؟ فَأَقَامَ الصَّلَاةَ، ثُمَّ عَادَ فَصَلَّى الْعِشَاءَ لِلنَّاسِ، فَلَمَّا فَرَغَ خَطَبَ قَالَ: " لَا صَلَاةَ لِمَنْ لَمْ يَقْرَأْ فِيهَا، إِنَّ الَّذِي صَنَعْتُ آنِفًا إِنِّي سَهَوْتُ، إِنِّي جَهَّزْتُ عِيرًا مِنَ الشَّامِ حَتَّى قَدِمَتِ الْمَدِينَةَ فَقَسَّمْتُهَا
Translation
✧ Umar b. al-Khattab prayed the late night prayer at al-Jabiyah and did not recite during it until he finished. When he finished, he entered, and Abd al-Rahman b. Awf went around to him and cleared his throat until Umar b. al-Khattab heard his sound and knew he had a need. He said: "Who is this?" He said: "Abd al-Rahman b. Awf." He said: "Do you have a need?" He said: "Yes." He said: "Then enter." So he entered and said: "Do you think that what you did just now—did the Messenger of God ﷺ enjoin it upon you, or did you see him do it?" He said: "And what is that?" He said: "You did not recite during the night prayer." He said: "Did I do that?" He said: "Yes." He said: "I was distracted. I prepared a caravan from Syria until it arrived in Madinah." He said: "Who is the muezzin?" So he performed the iqamah for prayer. Then he returned and prayed the night prayer for the people. When he finished, he gave a sermon and said: "There is no prayer for one who does not recite in it. As for what I did just now, I was distracted. I prepared a caravan from Syria until it arrived in Madinah, and I distributed it."
