عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ، عَنْ إِسْرَائِيلَ بْنِ يُونُسَ، عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ الْجُعْفِيِّ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا زِيَادُ بْنُ عِيَاضٍ الْأَشْعَرِيُّ قَالَ:
صَلَّى بِنَا عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ الْعِشَاءَ فَلَمْ أَسْمَعْ قِرَاءَتَهُ فِيهَا، فَقَالَ لَهُ أَبُو مُوسَى الْأَشْعَرِيُّ: مَا لَكَ لَمْ تَقْرَأْ يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ؟ قَالَ: " أَكَذَلِكَ يَا عَبْدَ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنَ عَوْفٍ ؟ " قَالَ: نَعَمْ قَالَ: فَأَمَرَ الْمُؤَذِّنَ فَأَقَامَ الصَّلَاةَ، وَقَرَأَ قِرَاءَةً فَسَمِعْتُهَا وَأَنَا فِي مُؤَخَّرِ الصُّفُوفِ، فَلَمَّا انْصَرَفَ قَالَ: " إِنِّي كُنْتُ لَأُصَلِّي وَأُحَدِّثُ نَفْسِي بِعِيرٍ بَعَثْتُهَا مِنَ الْمَدِينَةِ بِأَقْتَابِهَا وَأَحْلَاسِهَا مَتَى يَأْتِي ؟ وَإِنَّهُ لَا صَلَاةَ إِلَّا بِقِرَاءَةٍ
Translation
✧ Umar b. al-Khattab prayed the night prayer with us, and I did not hear him recite in it. Abu Musa al-Ash'ari said to him: "What is the matter with you, O Commander of the Faithful, that you did not recite?" He said: "Is it so, O Abd al-Rahman b. Awf?" He said: "Yes." He said: "Then he ordered the muezzin and he performed the iqamah, and he recited a recitation that I heard while I was at the back of the rows. When he finished, he said: "I was praying and talking to myself about a caravan I had sent from Madinah with its saddles and saddlecloths—when would it arrive? And indeed, there is no prayer except with recitation."
