أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنَا مَعْمَرٌ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ خُثَيْمٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ لَبِيبَةَ قَالَ:
جِئْتُ إِلَى أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ وَهُوَ جَالِسٌ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ الْحَرَامِ قَالَ: قُلْتُ: صِفْهُ لِي قَالَ: كَانَ رَجُلًا آدَمَ ذَا ضَفِيرَتَيْنِ، بَعِيدَ مَا بَيْنَ الْمَنْكِبَيْنِ، أَقْنَعَ الثِّنْتَيْنِ، قُلْتُ: أَخْبِرْنِي عَنْ أَمْرِ الْأُمُورِ نَبَعَ عَنْ صَلَاتِنَا الَّذِي لَا بُدَّ لَنَا مِنْهَا قَالَ: فَمَنْ أَنْتَ ؟ قَالَ: مِنْ قَوْمٍ سُرُّوا بِطَاعَتِهِمْ وَاشْتَمَلُوا بِهَا قَالَ: مِمَّنْ أَنْتَ ؟ قُلْتُ: مِنْ ثَقِيفَ قَالَ: فَأَيْنَ أَنْتَ مِنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ أَوْسٍ ؟ قَالَ: قُلْتُ: فَرَأَيْتُ كَانَ عَمْرٌو، وَلَكِنِّي جِئْتُكَ أَسْأَلُكَ قَالَ: أَتَقْرَأُ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ شَيْئًا ؟ قُلْتُ: نَعَمْ قَالَ: فَقَرَأْتُ لَهُ فَاتِحَةَ الْكِتَابِ فَقَالَ: هَذِهِ السَّبْعُ الْمَثَانِي الَّتِي يَقُولُ اللهُ تَعَالَى: ﴿وَلَقَدْ آتَيْنَاكَ سَبْعًا مِنَ الْمَثَانِي وَالْقُرْآنَ ﴾قَالَ: ثُمَّ قَالَ لِي: أَتَقْرَأُ سُورَةَ الْمَائِدَةِ ؟ قُلْتُ: نَعَمْ قَالَ: فَاقْرَأْ عَلَيَّ آيَةَ الْوُضُوءِ، فَقَرَأْتُهَا فَقَالَ: مَا أَرَاكَ إِلَّا عَرَفْتَ وُضُوءَ الصَّلَاةِ أَمَا سَمِعْتَ اللهَ يَقُولُ: ﴿أَقِمِ الصَّلاةَ لِدُلُوكِ الشَّمْسِ ﴾أَتَدْرِي مَا دُلُوكُ الشَّمْسِ ؟ قُلْتُ: لَا، قَالَ: إِذَا زَالَتِ الشَّمْسُ عَنْ كَبِدِ السَّمَاءِ - أَوْ عَنْ بَطْنِ السَّمَاءِ - بَعْدَ نِصْفِ النَّهَارِ قَالَ: نَعَمْ فَصَلِّ الظُّهْرَ حِينَئِذٍ، وَصَلِّ الْعَصْرَ وَالشَّمْسُ بَيْضَاءُ نَقِيَّةٌ تَجِدُ لَهَا مَسًّا قَالَ: أَتَدْرِي مَا غَسَقُ اللَّيْلِ ؟ قَالَ: قُلْتُ: نَعَمْ، غُرُوبُ الشَّمْسِ قَالَ: نَعَمْ، فَاحْدُرْهَا فِي أَثَرِهَا، ثُمَّ احْدُرْهَا فِي أَثَرِهَا، وَصَلِّ الْعِشَاءَ إِذَا ذَهَبَ الشَّفَقُ، وَادْلَأَمَّ اللَّيْلُ مِنْ هَاهُنَا - وَأَشَارَ إِلَى الْمَشْرِقِ -، فِيمَا بَيْنَكَ وَبَيْنَ ثُلُثِ اللَّيْلِ، وَمَا عَجَّلْتُ بَعْدَ ذَهَابِ بَيَاضِ الْأُفُقِ، فَهُوَ أَفْضَلُ، وَصَلِّ الْفَجْرَ إِذَا طَلَعَ الْفَجْرُ، أَتَعْرِفُ الْفَجْرَ ؟ قَالَ: قُلْتُ: نَعَمْ، قَالَ: لَيْسَ كُلُّ النَّاسِ يَعْرِفُهُ قَالَ: قُلْتُ: إِذَا اصْطَفَقَ بِالْبَيَاضِ قَالَ: نَعَمْ، فَصَلِّهَا حِينَئِذٍ إِلَى السَّدَفِ، ثُمَّ إِلَى السَّدَفِ وَقَالَ فِي حَدِيثِهِ: وَإِيَّاكَ وَالْحَبْوَةَ وَتَحَفَّظْ مِنَ السَّهْوِ حَتَّى تَفْرُغَ قَالَ: قُلْتُ: أَخْبِرْنِي عَنِ الصَّلَاةِ الْوُسْطَى قَالَ: أَمَا سَمِعْتَ اللهَ يَقُولُ: ﴿أَقِمِ الصَّلاةَ لِدُلُوكِ الشَّمْسِ إِلَى غَسَقِ اللَّيْلِ وَقُرْآنَ الْفَجْرِ ﴾الْآيَةَ، ﴿وَمِنْ بَعْدِ صَلاةِ الْعِشَاءِ ثَلاثُ عَوْرَاتٍ لَكُمْ ﴾فَذَكَرَ الصَّلَوَاتِ كُلَّهَا، ثُمَّ قَالَ: ﴿حَافِظُوا عَلَى الصَّلَوَاتِ وَالصَّلاةِ الْوُسْطَى ﴾أَلَا وَهِيَ الْعَصْرُ، أَلَا وَهِيَ الْعَصْرُ
Translation
✧ I came to Abu Hurayrah while he was sitting in the Sacred Mosque. He said: I said: Describe him to me. He said: He was a dark-skinned man with two braids, broad-shouldered, and hollow-cheeked. I said: Tell me about the most important of matters that springs from our prayer, which we cannot do without. He said: Who are you? He said: From a people who were pleased with their obedience and embraced it. He said: From whom are you? I said: From Thaqif. He said: Where are you in relation to Amr b. Aws? He said: I said: I saw that Amr was there, but I came to ask you. He said: Do you recite anything from the Quran? I said: Yes. He said: I recited to him the Opening of the Book, and he said: This is the Seven Oft-Repeated Verses about which Allah Most High says: "And We have certainly given you seven of the oft-repeated verses and the great Quran." Then he said to me: Do you recite Surah al-Ma'idah? I said: Yes. He said: Recite to me the verse of ablution. I recited it. He said: I think you have learned the ablution for prayer. Have you not heard Allah say: "Establish prayer at the sun's decline"? Do you know what the sun's decline is? I said: No. He said: When the sun moves from the meridian — or from the belly of the sky — after midday. He said: Yes, pray Dhuhr then. Pray Asr while the sun is white and clear, and you can feel its heat. He said: Do you know what the darkness of night is? I said: Yes, sunset. He said: Yes, so follow it immediately, then follow it immediately. Pray Isha when the twilight disappears and the night grows dark from here — and he pointed to the east — between that and one-third of the night. Whatever you hasten after the whiteness of the horizon disappears is better. Pray Fajr when dawn rises. Do you know dawn? He said: I said: Yes. He said: Not all people know it. I said: When the whiteness flashes. He said: Yes, pray it then until the darkness, then until the darkness. And he said in his hadith: Beware of sitting with legs drawn up, and guard against heedlessness until you finish. I said: Tell me about the middle prayer. He said: Have you not heard Allah say: "Establish prayer at the sun's decline until the darkness of the night and the Quran at dawn," the verse, and "And after the Isha prayer are three times of privacy for you"? He mentioned all the prayers, then said: "Guard strictly the prayers, especially the middle prayer." Indeed, it is Asr. Indeed, it is Asr.
