عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ، عَنْ مَعْمَرٍ، عَنْ مَطَرٍ الْوَرَّاقِ، وَغَيْرِهِ، عَنِ الْحَسَنِ قَالَ:
أَرْسَلَ عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ إِلَى امْرَأَةٍ مُغَيَّبَةٍ كَانَ يُدْخَلُ عَلَيْهَا، فَأَنْكَرَ ذَلِكَ، فَأَرْسَلَ إِلَيْهَا، فَقِيلَ لَهَا: أَجِيبِي عُمَرَ، فَقَالَتْ: يَا وَيْلَهَا مَا لَهَا وَلِعُمَرَ قَالَ: فَبَيْنَا هِيَ فِي الطَّرِيقِ فَزِعَتْ فَضَرَبَهَا الطَّلْقُ فَدَخَلَتْ دَارًا، فَأَلْقَتْ وَلَدَهَا، فَصَاحَ الصَّبِيُّ صَيْحَتَيْنِ، ثُمَّ مَاتَ، فَاسْتَشَارَ عُمَرُ أَصْحَابَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ، فَأَشَارَ عَلَيْهِ بَعْضُهُمْ أَنْ لَيْسَ عَلَيْكَ شَيْءٌ، إِنَّمَا أَنْتَ وَالٍ وَمُؤَدِّبٌ، قَالَ: وَصَمَتَ عَلِيٌّ فَأَقْبَلَ عَلَيْهِ، فَقَالَ: مَا تَقُولُ ؟ قَالَ: إِنْ كَانُوا قَالُوا بِرَأْيِهِمْ فَقَدْ أَخْطَأَ رَأْيُهُمْ، وَإِنْ كَانُوا قَالُوا فِي هَوَاكَ فَلَمْ يَنْصَحُوا لَكَ، أَرَى أَنَّ دِيَتَهُ عَلَيْكَ فَإِنَّكَ أَنْتَ أَفْزَعْتَهَا، وَأَلْقَتْ وَلَدَهَا فِي سَبَبِكَ، قَالَ: فَأَمَرَ عَلِيًّا أَنْ يَقْسِمَ عَقْلَهُ عَلَى قُرَيْشٍ

ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb sent for a woman whose husband was away, and to whom men used to come in. He disapproved of that, so he sent for her. It was said to her: "Answer ʿUmar." She said: "Woe to her! What has she to do with ʿUmar?" He said: While she was on the road she was seized with fear and the pangs of labour struck her. She entered a house and delivered her child. The child cried out twice, then died. ʿUmar consulted the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ. Some of them advised him: "There is nothing upon you; you are only a ruler and a disciplinarian." He said: ʿAlī was silent, so ʿUmar turned to him and said: "What do you say?" He said: "If they spoke from their own opinion, their opinion is mistaken, and if they spoke to please you, they did not give you sincere advice. I see that its blood-money is upon you, for it was you who frightened her, and she delivered her child because of you." He said: So he ordered ʿAlī to apportion its blood-money among Quraysh."
