Sulaymān b. Mūsā asked ʿAṭāʾ, while I was listening, about a man who made a bequest to a freed woman of his, saying: "She is an heir." ʿAṭāʾ said: "She does not become an heir. The heir is only the one for whom Allah has appointed an inheritance. But she is given from it the share of a woman. If the share of that woman is more than a third, it is reduced to a third, and if the deceased had made a bequest of something from his third, she shares proportionally (ḥuwwiṣat)." He said: "If a person bequeaths to a freed woman a share of his inheritance, and the estate is divided into eight shares, then she has the like of the share of a man, as a bequest like this other bequest."
