✧ What suffices a man of clothing

عَنِ الْحَسَنِ،
أَنَّ أُبَيَّ بْنَ كَعْبٍ، وَعَبْدَ اللهِ بْنَ مَسْعُودٍ اخْتَلَفَا فِي الصَّلَاةِ فِي الثَّوْبِ الْوَاحِدِ فَقَالَ أُبَيٌّ: لَا بَأْسَ بِهِ، قَدْ صَلَّى النَّبِيُّ ﷺ فِي ثَوْبٍ وَاحِدٍ فَالصَّلَاةُ فِيهِ جَائِزَةٌ. وَقَالَ ابْنُ مَسْعُودٍ: إِنَّمَا كَانَ ذَلِكَ إِذْ كَانَ النَّاسُ لَا يَجِدُونَ الثِّيَابَ، وَأَمَّا إِذْ وَجَدُوهَا فَالصَّلَاةُ فِي ثَوْبَيْنِ، فَقَامَ عُمَرُ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ فَقَالَ: الْقَوْلُ مَا قَالَ أُبَيٌّ، وَلَمْ يَأْلُ ابْنُ مَسْعُودٍ
Translation
✧ Ubayy b. Kaʿb and ʿAbd Allāh b. Masʿūd differed about prayer in a single garment. Ubayy said: There is no harm in it; the Prophet ﷺ prayed in a single garment, so prayer in it is permissible. Ibn Masʿūd said: That was only when people could not find garments; but when they find them, prayer should be in two garments. So ʿUmar stood on the pulpit and said: The correct view is what Ubayy said, and Ibn Masʿūd did not fall short.
