✧ What suffices a man of clothing

عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ عَنْ مَعْمَرٍ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ، عَنِ الْحَسَنِ قَالَ:

اخْتَلَفَ أُبَيُّ بْنُ كَعْبٍ، وَابْنُ مَسْعُودٍ فِي الرَّجُلِ يُصَلِّي فِي الثَّوْبِ الْوَاحِدِ، فَقَالَ أُبَيٌّ: يُصَلِّي فِي الثَّوْبِ الْوَاحِدِ، وَقَالَ ابْنُ مَسْعُودٍ: فِي ثَوْبَيْنِ فَبَلَغَ ذَلِكَ عُمَرَ فَأَرْسَلَ إِلَيْهِمَا فَقَالَ: اخْتَلَفْتُمَا فِي أَمْرٍ، ثُمَّ تَفَرَّقْتُمَا فَلَمْ يَدْرِ النَّاسُ بِأَيِّ ذَلِكَ يَأْخُذُونَ لَوْ أَتَيْتُمَا لَوَجَدْتُمَا عِنْدِي عِلْمًا. الْقَوْلُ مَا قَالَ أُبَيٌّ، وَلَمْ يَأْلُ ابْنُ مَسْعُودٍ

Translation

✧ Ubayy b. Kaʿb and Ibn Masʿūd differed about a man praying in a single garment. Ubayy said: He may pray in a single garment. Ibn Masʿūd said: In two garments. That reached ʿUmar, so he sent for them and said: You differed about a matter, then you parted, and the people did not know which of the two to follow. If you had come, you would have found knowledge with me. The correct view is what Ubayy said, and Ibn Masʿūd did not fall short.
