machine translationAbū ʿĪsā said: This is a good and sound (ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ) hadith, and it is the view of more than one of the people of knowledge. Sufyān al-Thawrī, Ibn al-Mubārak, al-Shāfiʿī, Aḥmad and Isḥāq hold it. They said: One may wipe over the two socks even if they are not shod with soles, if they are thick. He said: On this topic there is also a narration from Abū Mūsā. Abū ʿĪsā said: I heard Ṣāliḥ b. Muḥammad al-Tirmidhī say: I heard Abū Muqātil al-Samarqandī say: I entered upon Abū Ḥanīfah during the illness in which he died. He called for water and performed ablution while wearing two socks, and he wiped over them. Then he said: Today I did something I used not to do: I wiped over the two socks, and they are not shod with soles.

machine translationAs for the hadith of Bilāl, it is also weak (ḍaʿīf). Al-Zaylaʿī said: al-Ṭabarānī narrated it in his Muʿjam via Ibn Abī Shaybah, who said: Abū Muʿāwiyah narrated to us, from al-Aʿmash, from al-Ḥakam, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Abī Laylā, from Kaʿb b. ʿUjrah, from Bilāl, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to wipe over the two khuffs and the two socks. He also narrated it from Yazīd b. Abī Ziyād, from Ibn Abī Laylā, from Kaʿb b. ʿUjrah, from Bilāl, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ ... similarly. Yazīd b. Abī Ziyād and Ibn Abī Laylā are both considered weak, though they are ascribed truthfulness. End of al-Zaylaʿī's words. I say: In the first chain is al-Aʿmash, who is a concealer of defects (mudallis), and he narrated it from al-Ḥakam with the ambiguous wording "from" (ʿanʿanah) without mentioning that he heard it from him. Al-Dhahabī said in al-Mīzān, in the entry on al-Aʿmash: He sometimes committed tadlīs from a weak narrator without anyone knowing. If he says "he narrated to us", there is no issue; if he says "from", the possibility arises, except in the case of the many teachers from whom he narrated, such as Ibrāhīm, Abū Wāʾil and Abū Ṣāliḥ al-Sammān, for his narration from this group is taken as connected. End. In the second chain is Yazīd b. Abī Ziyād, who is weak. Al-Ḥāfiẓ said in al-Taqrīb in his entry: Weak; he grew old and changed, and became one who accepted prompting, and he was a Shīʿite. End. If you say: How can you say the hadith of Bilāl is weak, when al-Ḥāfiẓ said in al-Dirāyah: On this topic there is a narration from Bilāl, which al-Ṭabarānī narrated with two chains, the men of one of which are trustworthy? He meant by the men of one of them the men of the first chain, for they are all trustworthy. I say: There is no doubt that the men of the first chain of Bilāl's hadith are all trustworthy, but among them is al-Aʿmash, and you have learned that he is a mudallis and narrated it from al-Ḥakam with ʿanʿanah, and the ʿanʿanah of a mudallis is not accepted. It is established that the trustworthiness of the men of a chain does not necessitate the soundness of the hadith, since it may contain a trustworthy mudallis who narrated from his trustworthy teacher with ʿanʿanah, or it may have another defect. Do you not see that al-Ḥāfiẓ mentioned in al-Talkhīṣ the hadith of ʿīnah which al-Ṭabarānī narrated via al-Aʿmash, from ʿAṭāʾ, from Ibn ʿUmar, and mentioned that Ibn al-Qaṭṭān authenticated it? Then he said, in these words: In my view the chain that Ibn al-Qaṭṭān authenticated is defective, because the trustworthiness of its men does not necessitate that it is sound, since al-Aʿmash is a mudallis and did not mention hearing it from ʿAṭāʾ. End of al-Ḥāfiẓ's words. And al-Zaylaʿī said in Naṣb al-Rāyah, in the discussion of reciting the basmalah aloud, quoting Ibn al-Hādī: Even if the men are assumed to be trustworthy, it does not follow that the hadith is sound, until irregularity (shudhūdh) is excluded from it.

machine translationAl-Bayhaqī mentioned in his Sunan that Abū Muḥammad Yaḥyā b. Manṣūr said: I saw Muslim b. al-Ḥajjāj declare this report weak. He said: Abū Qays al-Awdī and Huzayl b. Shuraḥbīl cannot be relied upon, especially since they contradict the eminent narrators who narrated this report from al-Mughīrah, saying, "he wiped over the two khuffs", and they said: The apparent meaning of the Qurʾān is not abandoned for the like of Abū Qays and Huzayl. He said: I mentioned this account from Muslim to Abū al-ʿAbbās Muḥammad b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Daghūlī, and I heard him say: I heard ʿAlī b. Muḥammad b. Shaybān say: I heard Abū Qudāmah al-Sarakhsī say: ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Mahdī said: I said to Sufyān al-Thawrī, "Even if you narrated to me the hadith of Abū Qays from Huzayl, I would not accept it from you." Sufyān said: The hadith is weak. Then al-Bayhaqī transmitted with a chain from Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal, who said: This hadith is only narrated through Abū Qays al-Awdī, and ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Mahdī refused to narrate this hadith and said: It is rejected (munkar).

machine translationAl-Bayhaqī also transmitted with a chain from ʿAlī b. al-Madīnī, who said: The hadith of al-Mughīrah b. Shuʿbah on wiping was narrated from al-Mughīrah by the people of Medina, the people of Kufa and the people of Basra. Huzayl b. Shuraḥbīl also narrated it from al-Mughīrah, except that he said, "and he wiped over the two socks", so he contradicted the people. He also transmitted from Yaḥyā b. Maʿīn, who said: All the people narrate it as "over the two khuffs" except Abū Qays. The Shaykh said: Whoever authenticates it relies, after accepting Abū Qays as reliable, on the fact that it is not a conflicting contradiction of the narration of the majority, but rather an addition to what they narrated and does not oppose it, especially as it is an independent route through Huzayl's narration from al-Mughīrah, not sharing the well-known narrators in its chain. End. Thus in Naṣb al-Rāyah. I say: His statement "rather it is an addition to what they narrated" etc. is open to question, for all the people narrated from al-Mughīrah with the wording "he wiped over the two khuffs", while Abū Qays contradicts them all, narrating from Huzayl from al-Mughīrah with the wording "he wiped over the two socks and the two sandals". So he did not add to what they narrated; rather he contradicted what they narrated. Yes, if he had narrated with the wording "he wiped over the two khuffs, the two socks and the two sandals", it would be right to say that he narrated an additional matter. Since he did not, it is not so; so reflect. When you know all this, it becomes clear to you that most of the imams of hadith ruled that this hadith is weak, although they were not unaware of the issue of the addition of a trustworthy narrator. Their ruling, in my view, and Allah the Exalted knows best, takes precedence over al-Tirmidhī's ruling that it is good and sound (ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ).

machine translationAs for the hadith of Abū Mūsā, al-Ṭaḥāwī narrated it in Sharḥ al-Āthār via Abū Sinān, from al-Ḍaḥḥāk b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, from Abū Mūsā, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ wiped over his two socks and his two sandals. Ibn Mājah and al-Bayhaqī also narrated it via ʿĪsā b. Sinān, from al-Ḍaḥḥāk b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, from Abū Mūsā. It has already been mentioned that Abū Dāwūd ruled on this hadith that it is neither connected nor strong. Al-Bayhaqī said after narrating the hadith: It has two defects. One is that al-Ḍaḥḥāk b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān's hearing from Abū Mūsā is not established; the second is that ʿĪsā b. Sinān is weak. End. I say: Abū Sinān who appears in al-Ṭaḥāwī's chain is ʿĪsā b. Sinān. Al-Ḥāfiẓ said in Tahdhīb al-Tahdhīb in his entry: al-Athram said: I asked Abū ʿAbdillāh about Abū Sinān ʿĪsā b. Sinān, and he declared him weak. Yaʿqūb b. Shaybah said from Ibn Maʿīn: weak in hadith (layyin al-ḥadīth). A group said from Ibn Maʿīn: weak in hadith (ḍaʿīf al-ḥadīth). Abū Zurʿah said: confused (mukhalliṭ), weak in hadith. Abū Ḥātim said: not strong in hadith. Al-ʿIjlī said: There is no harm in him. Al-Nasāʾī said: weak. Ibn Khirāsh said: truthful (ṣadūq), and once said: there is something objectionable in his hadith. Ibn Ḥibbān mentioned him in al-Thiqāt. Al-Kinānī said from Abū Ḥāzim: his hadith is written down but not used as proof. End of al-Ḥāfiẓ's words. If you say: Shaykh ʿAlāʾ al-Dīn al-Mārdīnī said: Declaring it weak due to the lack of established hearing of ʿĪsā b. Sinān from Abū Mūsā follows the position of those who require established hearing for connection. Then he said: Moreover, it is contradicted by what ʿAbd al-Ghanī mentioned, for he said in al-Kamāl: al-Ḍaḥḥāk heard from Abū Mūsā. He said: Ibn Sinān was declared trustworthy by Ibn Maʿīn and declared weak by others. Al-Tirmidhī narrated in the Funerals chapter a hadith with ʿĪsā b. Sinān in its chain and graded it good (ḥasan). End. Thus one of those who permit wiping over socks absolutely quoted in his treatise and approved it; so apparently the hadith of Abū Mūsā is good (ḥasan) and fit for use as proof. I say: Abū Dāwūd and others mentioned that the hadith of Abū Mūsā has two defects that make it weak: the first is a break in the chain, and the second is the weakness of ʿĪsā b. Sinān. If al-Ḍaḥḥāk's hearing from Abū Mūsā is established, the first defect is removed and the second remains, which suffices for the weakness of Abū Mūsā's hadith. As for al-Mārdīnī's statement that Ibn Maʿīn declared Ibn Sinān trustworthy and others declared him weak, Ibn Maʿīn also declared him weak. Al-Dhahabī said in al-Mīzān: Aḥmad and Ibn Maʿīn declared him weak, and he is among those whose hadith is written despite their weakness, etc. Al-Ḥāfiẓ said in Tahdhīb al-Tahdhīb: Yaʿqūb b. Shaybah said from Ibn Maʿīn: weak in hadith (layyin al-ḥadīth), and a group said from Ibn Maʿīn: weak in hadith (ḍaʿīf al-ḥadīth), as you learned above. I say: This hadith has a third defect for its weakness, namely that ʿĪsā b. Sinān is confused (mukhalliṭ). Al-Ḥāfiẓ Abū Zurʿah said: confused, weak in hadith, as you learned above in al-Ḥāfiẓ's words. As for al-Mārdīnī's statement that al-Tirmidhī narrated in the Funerals chapter a hadith with ʿĪsā b. Sinān in its chain and graded it good, it is not worth heeding, for al-Tirmidhī sometimes grades a hadith good while explicitly stating a break in it, and likewise while explicitly stating the weakness of some of its narrators. Moreover, al-Tirmidhī's leniency is well known.
