Notes

  • I heard Ahmad b. al-Hasan say: We were with Ahmad b. Hanbal when they discussed upon whom the Friday prayer is obligatory. Ahmad did not mention anything concerning it from the Prophet ﷺ. Ahmad b. al-Hasan said: I said to Ahmad b. Hanbal, “There is a report concerning it from Abu Hurayrah, from the Prophet ﷺ.” Ahmad said, “From the Prophet ﷺ?” I replied, “Yes,” and quoted the hadith. Ahmad b. Hanbal became angry with me and said, “Ask your Lord for forgiveness! Ask your Lord for forgiveness!” Abu ‘Isa said: Ahmad b. Hanbal reacted this way only because he considered this hadith worthless and deemed it weak due to the state of its chain of transmission.
