"I heard 'Ali saying: 'Indeed I am a man who, when I hear a Hadith from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, then Allah causes me to benefit from it as much as He wills for me to benefit from it. When a man among his Companions narrates to me I ask him to swear an oath to me, about it, and when he swears an oath to me I trust him. And Abu Bakr narrated to me - and Abu Bakr told the truth - he said: "I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying: 'There is no man who commits a sin, then stands for purification, then performs Salat, then seeks forgiveness from Allah, except that Allah forgives him.' Then he recites this Ayah: Those who, when they have committed Fahishah or wronged themselves with evil, remember Allah... (3:135) until the end of the Ayah."

Notes

machine translationAbū ʿĪsā said: This ḥadīth was narrated by Shuʿbah and more than one person from ʿUthmān b. al-Mughīrah, and they attributed it to the Prophet (marfūʿ). Misʿar and Sufyān narrated it from ʿUthmān b. al-Mughīrah and did not attribute it to the Prophet. Some of them narrated it from Misʿar as a statement stopping at the Companion (mawqūf), and some attributed it to the Prophet. Sufyān al-Thawrī also narrated it from ʿUthmān b. al-Mughīrah and made it mawqūf. And we do not know of any ḥadīth from Asmāʾ b. al-Ḥakam except this one.

  • Mizzī

machine translational-Bukhārī said: Nothing was narrated from him, meaning Asmāʾ b. al-Hakam al-Fazārī, except this hadith and another hadith, in which he was not corroborated. The Companions of the Prophet ﷺ narrated from one another, and none of them made another swear an oath. I (that is, al-Mizzī) say: What al-Bukhārī, may God have mercy on him, mentioned does not impugn the soundness of this hadith and does not necessitate its weakness.

machine translationʿUthmān b. al-Mughīrah, whose kunyah is Abū al-Mughīrah, who is ʿUthmān b. Abī Zurʿah, who is ʿUthmān al-Aʿshā, narrated it from ʿAlī b. Rabīʿah al-Wālibī, from Asmāʾ b. al-Hakam al-Fazārī, from ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib. Misʿar b. Kidām, Sufyān al-Thawrī, Shuʿbah, Abū ʿAwānah, Sharīk, Qays, Isrāʾīl and al-Ḥasan b. ʿUmārah narrated it from him in that way, and they agreed on its chain, except that Shuʿbah among them was in doubt about Asmāʾ b. al-Hakam, so he said: from Asmāʾ, or Abū Asmāʾ, or Ibn Asmāʾ. ʿAlī b. ʿĀbis differed from them, and narrated it from ʿUthmān b. al-Mughīrah, from Abū Ṣādiq, from Rabīʿah b. Nājid, from ʿAlī, and he erred in it; ʿAbdullāh b. Wahb said that about him. ʿUbaydullāh b. Yūsuf al-Jubayrī differed with him and narrated it from ʿAlī b. ʿĀbis, from ʿUthmān, from a man, from ʿAlī. Abū Isḥāq al-Sabīʿī also narrated this hadith, and there is disagreement about him. ʿAbd al-Wahhāb b. al-Ḍaḥḥāk al-ʿUraḍī narrated it from Ismāʿīl b. ʿAyyāsh, from Abān b. Abī ʿAyyāsh, from Abū Isḥāq al-Hamdānī, who said: I heard ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib, from Abū Bakr. ʿAbd al-Wahhāb b. Najdah differed with him, from Ismāʿīl, and said in it: from Abū Isḥāq, from al-Ḥārith or another, from ʿAlī, from Abū Bakr. Mūsā b. Muḥammad b. ʿAṭāʾ differed with them and narrated it from Ismāʿīl b. ʿAyyāsh, from Shuʿbah b. al-Ḥajjāj, from Abū Isḥāq, from ʿAlī, from Abū Bakr, mentioning no one between them; this Mūsā is abandoned in hadith (matrūk al-ḥadīth), a Maqdisī known as Abū Ṭāhir al-Maqdisī. Dāwūd b. Mihrān al-Dabbāgh narrated it from ʿUmar b. Yazīd, judge of al-Madāʾin, from Abū Isḥāq, from ʿAbd Khayr, from ʿAlī, from Abū Bakr. al-Faraj b. al-Yamān differed with him and narrated it from ʿUmar b. Yazīd, from ʿAmr b. Murrah, from ʿAbdullāh b. Salimah, from ʿAlī, from Abū Bakr. Abū al-Muthannā Sulaymān b. Yazīd also narrated this hadith, and there is disagreement about him. ʿAbdullāh b. Ḥamzah al-Zubayrī narrated it from ʿAbdullāh b. Nāfiʿ al-Ṣāʾigh, from Abū al-Muthannā, from al-Mughīrah b. ʿAlī, from ʿAlī, from Abū Bakr, and he erred in it; Abū al-Muthannā only narrated it from al-Maqburī. There is disagreement about al-Maqburī in it. Muslim b. ʿAmr al-Ḥadhdhāʾ al-Madanī said, from Ibn Nāfiʿ, from Ibn al-Muthannā Sulaymān b. Yazīd, from Saʿīd al-Maqburī, from Abū Hurayrah, from ʿAlī, from Abū Bakr. Saʿd b. Saʿīd b. Abī Saʿīd al-Maqburī narrated it from his brother ʿAbdullāh b. Saʿīd, from his grandfather Abū Saʿīd al-Maqburī, that he heard it from ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib, from Abū Bakr, and he did not mention Abū Hurayrah in it. The best of them in chain and the most sound is what al-Thawrī and Misʿar and those who followed them narrated from ʿUthmān b. al-Mughīrah.
