✧ We were sitting in the mosque with the Messenger of God ﷺ, and Bashir was a man who restrained his speech. Abu Tha`labah came and said: O Bashir b. Sa`d, do you remember the hadith of the Messenger of God ﷺ about the rulers? Hudhayfah was sitting with Bashir, so Hudhayfah said: I remember his sermon. Abu Tha`labah sat down, and Hudhayfah said: The Messenger of God ﷺ said: You are in prophethood as long as God wills it to be, then He will remove it when He wills to remove it. Then there will be a caliphate upon the pattern of prophethood, and it will remain as long as God wills it to remain, then He will remove it when He wills to remove it. Then there will be a biting monarchy, and it will remain as long as God wills it to remain, then He will remove it when He wills to remove it. Then there will be tyranny, and it will remain as long as God wills it to remain, then He will remove it when He wills to remove it. Then there will be a caliphate upon the pattern of prophethood. Then he fell silent. He said: Then `Umar arrived with Yazid b. al-Nu`man in his company, so I wrote to him reminding him of the hadith. I wrote to him: I hope that the Commander of the Faithful will be after the biting monarchy and the tyranny. He said: Yazid took the letter and brought it to `Umar, and he was pleased with it and it delighted him.
