✧ I was the first of the people to come to ʿUmar ؓ when he was stabbed. He said: O Abu ʿAbbās, preserve from me three things, for I fear that people will not reach me [in time]. I have not ruled on kalāla, I have not appointed a successor over the people, and every slave I own is free. It was said to him: Appoint a successor. He said: Whichever of those I do, one better than me has done it. If I appoint a successor, one better than me appointed a successor, and if I leave the people to their own affair, the Messenger of God ﷺ left it. I said: Rejoice in Paradise, O Commander of the Faithful. You accompanied the Messenger of God ﷺ and prolonged his company, then you took charge and were just, and you delivered the trust. ʿUmar ؓ said: As for your giving me glad tidings of Paradise, by God besides whom there is no deity, if I had all that is between heaven and earth I would ransom myself with it from what is ahead of me before I learn the outcome. As for what you mentioned about the affair of the Muslims, by God I wish I had been delivered from it with neither liability nor credit. As for what you mentioned about the company of the Messenger of God ﷺ, that is so.
