✧ I saw Muhammad b. Maslama observing a woman from above a wall, looking at her. I said to him: "Do you do this while you are one of the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ?" He said: "I heard the Prophet ﷺ say: 'When God, Mighty and Majestic, casts into the heart of one of you the proposal of a woman, there is no harm in looking at her.'"

machine translationMuḥammad b. Sulaymān b. Abī Ḥathmah narrates it from his paternal uncle Sahl b. Abī Ḥathmah, from Muḥammad b. Maslamah. Ibrāhīm b. Ṣirmah related it with this hadith from Yaḥyā b. Saʿīd, from him. Al-Ḥajjāj b. Arṭāh also narrated it from him, and there was disagreement about it on his authority. ʿAbd al-Wāḥid b. Ziyād, Yaḥyā b. Saʿīd al-Umawī and Yazīd b. Hārūn narrated it from al-Ḥajjāj b. Arṭāh, from Muḥammad b. Sulaymān b. Abī Ḥathmah, from his uncle Sahl, from Muḥammad b. Maslamah. Abū Muʿāwiyah al-Ḍarīr differed from them: he reversed its chain and did not preserve it accurately, saying: from al-Ḥajjāj, from Sahl b. Muḥammad b. Abī Ḥathmah, from his uncle Sulaymān b. Abī Ḥathmah, from Muḥammad b. Maslamah. Ḥammād b. Salamah narrated it from al-Ḥajjāj, from Muḥammad b. Sahl b. Ḥunayf, from his father, from Muḥammad b. Maslamah, and he also erred. The correct version is the statement of ʿAbd al-Wāḥid b. Ziyād and those who followed him from al-Ḥajjāj. Al-Wāqidī narrated this hadith from Muḥammad b. Yaḥyā b. Sahl b. Abī Ḥathmah, from his father, from his grandfather, from Muḥammad b. Maslamah, but it is not known by this chain. They differed over the name of the woman whom Muḥammad b. Maslamah was pursuing: in the hadith of Ibrāhīm b. Ṣirmah from Yaḥyā b. Saʿīd she is Nubaytah, with a nūn; in the hadith of Abū Muʿāwiyah al-Ḍarīr she is Buthaynah bt. al-Ḍaḥḥāk. Both are mistaken. The correct one is what the others mentioned, that she is Thubaytah bt. al-Ḍaḥḥāk, the sister of Abū Jubayrah b. al-Ḍaḥḥāk and the sister of Thābit b. al-Ḍaḥḥāk. And Ḥammād b. Salamah's statement "daughter of al-Ḍaḥḥāk b. Qays" is a mistake.
