✧ If a woman consults a man about whom she should marry, should he inform her about what he knows?

أَخْبَرَنَا حَاجِبُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ الْمَنْبِجِيُّ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا حَجَّاجٌ يَعْنِي ابْنَ مُحَمَّدٍ الْأَعْوَرَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ أَبِي ذِئْبٍ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ وَيَزِيدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ قُسَيْطٍ عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ يَعْنِي ابْنَ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ عَوْفٍ وَعَنِ الْحَارِثِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ ثَوْبَانَ أَنَّهُمَا سَأَلَا فَاطِمَةَ بِنْتَ قَيْسٍ عَنْ أَمْرِهَا فَقَالَتْ طَلَّقَنِي زَوْجِي ثَلَاثًا فَقَالَ الْوَكِيلُ لَيْسَ لَكِ سُكْنَى وَلَا نَفَقَةٌ قَالَتْ

فَأَتَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَذَكَرْتُ ذَلِكَ لَهُ فَقَالَ «لَيْسَ لَكِ سُكْنَى وَلَا نَفَقَةٌ اعْتَدِّي عِنْدَ ابْنِ أُمِّ مَكْتُومٍ فَإِذَا حَلَلْتِ فَآذِنِينِي» قَالَتْ فَلَمَّا حَلَلْتُ آذَنْتُهُ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «وَمَنْ خَطَبَكِ؟» فَقُلْتُ مُعَاوِيَةُ وَرَجُلٌ آخَرُ مِنْ قُرَيْشٍ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ «أَمَّا مُعَاوِيَةُ فَإِنَّهُ غُلَامٌ مِنْ غِلْمَانِ قُرَيْشٍ لَا شَيْءَ لَهُ وَأَمَّا الْآخَرُ فَإِنَّهُ صَاحِبُ شَرٍّ لَا خَيْرَ فِيهِ وَلَكِنِ انْكِحِي أُسَامَةَ بْنَ زَيْدٍ» فَكَرِهْتُهُ فَقَالَ ذَلِكَ ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ فَنَكَحْتُهُ

✧ So I came to the Prophet ﷺ and mentioned that to him. He said: "You have no right to accommodation or maintenance. Observe your waiting period at the house of Ibn Umm Maktum, and when you become lawful, inform me." She said: "When I became lawful, I informed him, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Who has proposed to you?'" I said: "Mu'awiya and another man from Quraysh." The Prophet ﷺ said: "As for Mu'awiya, he is a young man among the young men of Quraysh with nothing to his name; as for the other, he is a man of evil, no good in him. But marry Usama b. Zayd." I disliked him, and he said that three times, so I married him.
