✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ gave me a piece of land and gave Abu Bakr a piece of land. He said: We disputed about a cluster—meaning a palm tree. I said: 'It is from my land!' Abu Bakr said: 'It is from my land!' He said: 'O Abu Bakr, do you not see? Look, do you not see? It is from my land.' He refused and said to me a word that he regretted. He said: 'O Rabi'a, say to me the like of what I said to you so that it may be retribution.' I said: 'No.' He said: 'By God, then I will surely seek help against you!' I said: 'You? Yes.' He went intending to go to the Prophet ﷺ and I followed him. Some people from my tribe came and said: 'May God have mercy on Abu Bakr; he is the one who said to you what he said and he seeks help against you!' They went with me, and I said to them: 'Do you know who this is? This is Abu Bakr al-Siddiq, the second of two when they were in the cave. He is coming to the Messenger of God while angry, and the Messenger of God ﷺ will become angry because of his anger, and God, Mighty and Majestic, will become angry because of the anger of His Messenger, and Rabi'a will perish. Go back!' So I sent them back and went on. He had preceded me to the Prophet ﷺ and told him the story. When I came, he said to me: 'O Rabi'a, what is between you and al-Siddiq?' I said: 'O Messenger of God, he said something to me and told me: Say the like of what I said to you so that it may be retribution. I said: I will not say to you the like of what you said to me.' The Messenger of God ﷺ said: 'Indeed, do not say to him the like of what he said to you, but say: May God forgive you, O Abu Bakr.' So I said: 'May God forgive you, Abu Bakr. May God forgive you, Abu Bakr.' He said: Abu Bakr ؓ turned away weeping.
