حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سَعِيدِ بْنِ أَبِي مَرْيَمَ ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يُوسُفَ الْفِرْيَابِيُّ ثنا سُفْيَانُ عَنْ فِرَاسٍ عَنِ الشَّعْبِيِّ عَنْ مَسْرُوقٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ قَالَ
قُرِئَتْ عِنْدَهُ أَوْ قَرَأَهَا {إِنَّ إِبْرَاهِيمَ كَانَ أُمَّةً قَانِتًا} فَقَالَ عَبْدُ اللهِ إِنَّ مُعَاذًا كَانَ أُمَّةً قَانِتًا قَالُوا يَا أَبَا عَبْدَ الرَّحْمَنِ {إِنَّ إِبْرَاهِيمَ كَانَ أُمَّةً قَانِتًا} فَقَالَ عَبْدُ اللهِ وَهَلْ تَدْرُونَ مَا الْأُمَّةُ؟ الَّذِي يُعَلِّمُ النَّاسَ الْخَيْرَ وَالْقَانِتُ الَّذِي يُطِيعُ اللهَ وَرَسُولَهُ
Translation

✧ It was recited in his presence, or he recited it: {Indeed Ibrahim was a nation, devoutly obedient.} Then ʿAbdullah said: Indeed Muʿadh was a nation, devoutly obedient. They said: O Abu ʿAbd al-Rahman, {Indeed Ibrahim was a nation, devoutly obedient.} Then ʿAbdullah said: Do you know what the nation is? The one who teaches people good, and the devoutly obedient is the one who obeys Allah and His Messenger.
