حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ ثنا حَجَّاجُ بْنُ الْمِنْهَالِ ثنا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ عَنْ عَاصِمِ ابْنِ بَهْدَلَةَ عَنْ زِرِّ بْنِ حُبَيْشٍ أَنَّ ابْنَ مَسْعُودٍ وَكَانَ عِنْدَهُ غُلَامٌ فَقَرَأَ الْمُصْحَفَ وَعِنْدَهُ أَصْحَابُهُ فَجَاءَ رَجُلٌ يُقَالُ لَهُ خَضْرَمَةُ فَقَالَ
يَا أَبَا عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ أَيُّ دَرَجَاتِ الْإِسْلَامِ أَفْضَلُ؟ قَالَ الصَّلَاةُ قَالَ ثُمَّ أَيٌّ؟ قَالَ الزَّكَاةُ قَالَ ثُمَّ أَيٌّ؟ قَالَ بِرُّ الْوَالِدَيْنِ قَالَ فَمَعَ مَنِ الْمَرْءُ؟ قَالَ أَحْسَبُهُ قَالَ مَعَ مَنْ أَحَبَّ

✧ ‘O Abu ‘Abd al-Rahman, which of the degrees of Islam is best?’ He said: ‘Prayer.’ He said: ‘Then which?’ He said: ‘Zakat.’ He said: ‘Then which?’ He said: ‘Kindness to parents.’ He said: ‘Then with whom is a person (to be)?’ He said: ‘I think he said: ‘With the one he loves.’’
