حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ ثنا أَبُو نُعَيْمٍ ثنا أَبُو جَنَابٍ يَحْيَى بْنُ أَبِي حَيَّةَ الْكَلْبِيُّ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ عَوْنَ بْنَ عَبْدِ اللهِ يَقُولُ سَأَلْتُ الْأَسْوَدَ بْنَ يَزِيدَ هَلْ كَانَ ابْنُ مَسْعُودٍ يُفَضِّلُ عَمَلًا عَلَى عَمَلٍ؟ فَقَالَ نَعَمْ سَأَلْتُ ابْنَ مَسْعُودٍ فَقَالَ
سَأَلْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ أَيُّ الْأَعْمَالِ أَحَبُّهَا إِلَى اللهِ وَأَقْرَبُهَا؟ قَالَ «الصَّلَاةُ لِوَقْتِهَا» قُلْتُ ثُمَّ مَاذَا عَلَى أَثَرِ ذَلِكَ؟ قَالَ «ثُمَّ بِرُّ الْوَالِدَيْنِ» قُلْتُ ثُمُّ مَاذَا عَلَى أَثَرِ ذَلِكَ؟ قَالَ «الْجِهَادُ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ» وَلَوِ اسْتَزَدْتُهُ لَزَادَنِي
Translation

✧ I asked the Prophet ﷺ, saying, ‘O Messenger of Allah, which deeds are most beloved to Allah and closest to Him?’ He said: ‘Prayer at its time.’ I said: ‘Then what comes after that?’ He said: ‘Then kindness to parents.’ I said: ‘Then what comes after that?’ He said: ‘Struggle (jihad) in the path of Allah.’ And if I had asked him for more, he would have increased for me.
