حَدَّثَنَا سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ الْعَطَّارُ الْبَصْرِيُّ ثنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَبْدَةَ الضَّبِّيُّ ثنا حَمَّادُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ عَنِ الْحَجَّاجِ عَنْ سُلَيْمَانَ قَالَ ذَكَرَ أَبُو عَمْرٍو الشَّيْبَانِيُّ أَخْبَرَنِي رَبُّ هَذِهِ الدَّارِ يَعْنِي ابْنَ مَسْعُودٍ قَالَ
سَأَلْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ أَيُّ الْأَعْمَالِ أَفْضَلُ؟ قَالَ «الصَّلَاةُ لِمِيقَاتِهَا» قُلْتُ ثُمَّ أَيٌّ؟ قَالَ «بِرُّ الْوَالِدَيْنِ» قُلْتُ ثُمَّ أَيٌّ؟ قَالَ «الْجِهَادُ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ» ثُمَّ سَكَتَ عَنِّي وَلَوِ اسْتَزَدْتُهُ لَزَادَنِي

✧ I asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, “Which deeds are best?” He said, “The prayer at its appointed time.” I said, “Then which?” He said, “Dutifulness to parents.” I said, “Then which?” He said, “Jihad in the cause of Allah.” Then he fell silent with me, and if I had asked for more, he would have told me more.
