حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ النَّضْرِ الْأَزْدِيُّ ثنا مُعَاوِيَةُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو ثنا زَائِدَةُ عَنِ الْأَعْمَشِ عَنْ مُسْلِمٍ عَنْ مَسْرُوقٍ قَالَ
كُنَّا إِذَا قَامَ عَبْدُ اللهِ نَجْلِسُ بَعْدَهُ فَنُثَبِّتُ النَّاسَ فِي الْقِرَاءَةِ فَإِذَا قُمْنَا صَلَّيْنَا فَبَلَغَهُ ذَلِكَ فَدَخَلْنَا عَلَيْهِ فَقَالَ «أَتُحَمِّلُونَ النَّاسَ مَا لَا يُحَمَّلُوا يَرَوْنَكُمْ فَيَحْسَبُونَ أَنَّهَا سُنَّةٌ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ لَا بُدَّ فَاعِلِينَ فَفِي بُيُوتِكُمْ» قَالَ سُلَيْمَانُ حَدَّثَنَا أَيْضًا عَمْرُو بْنُ مُرَّةَ عَنْ أَبِي عُبَيْدَةَ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ

✧ When ʿAbd Allah stood, we would sit after him and help people with the recitation. Then when we stood, we prayed. That reached him, so we entered upon him and he said: “Do you burden people with what they are not burdened? They see you and think it is a Sunnah. If you must do it, then in your houses.” Sulayman said: ʿAmr b. Murrah also narrated to us from Abu ʿUbaydah from ʿAbd Allah.
