✧ There were two towns, one righteous and the other wicked. A man left the wicked town intending to go to the righteous town, and death came to him wherever Allah willed. The angel and the devil disputed over him. The devil said, “By Allah, he never disobeyed me.” The angel said, “He had set out intending repentance.” It was decided between them that they should see to which of the two towns he was closer. They found him closer to the righteous town by a span, so he was forgiven. Maʿmar said, “And I heard someone say, ‘Allah brought the righteous town closer to him.’”
