حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ الدَّبَرِيُّ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّزَّاقِ عَنْ مَعْمَرٍ

عَنْ قَتَادَةَ وَحَمَّادٍ قَالَا سَمِعْتَهُمْ يَقُولُونَ سَمِعَهُمَا يَقُولَانِ كَانَ ابْنُ مَسْعُودٍ يَقُولُ «إِنَّ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ كَانَ حِصْنًا حَصِينًا لِلْإِسْلَامِ يُدْخَلُ فِي الْإِسْلَامِ وَلَا يُخْرَجُ مِنْهُ فَلَمَّا مَاتَ عُمَرُ انْثَلَمَ مِنَ الْحِصْنِ ثُلْمَةُ فَهُوَ يَخْرُجُ مِنْهُ وَلَا يَدْخُلُ فِيهِ وَكَانَ إِذَا سَلَكَ طَرِيقًا وَجَدْنَاهُ سَهْلًا فَإِذَا ذُكِرَ الصَّالِحُونَ فَحَيَّ هَلَا بِعُمَرَ كَانَ فَصْلَ مَا بَيْنَ الزِّيَادَةِ وَالنُّقْصَانِ وَاللهِ لَوَدِدْتُ أَنِّي أَخْدُمُ مِثْلَهُ حَتَّى أَمُوتَ»

✧ From Qatādah and Ḥammād, who said: I heard them saying—he heard the two of them saying—that Ibn Masʿūd used to say, "ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb was a strong fortress for Islam: one entered Islam and did not leave it. When ʿUmar died, a breach was made in the fortress, so one leaves it and does not enter it. When he took a path, we found it easy. When the righteous are mentioned, then come quickly with ʿUmar. He was the dividing line between increase and decrease. By Allah, I wish I could serve someone like him until I die."
