حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ النَّضْرِ الْأَزْدِيُّ ثنا مُعَاوِيَةُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو ثنا زَائِدَةُ ثنا الْأَعْمَشُ عَنْ شَقِيقٍ قَالَ قَالَ

عَبْدُ اللهِ «وَاللهِ إِنِّي لَأَحْسِبُ عِلْمَ عُمَرَ لَوْ وُضِعَ فِي كِفَّةِ الْمِيزَانِ وَوُضِعَ سَائِرُ أَحْيَاءِ أَهْلِ الْأَرْضِ فِي كِفَّةِ الْمِيزَانِ لَرَجَحَ عَلَيْهِ عَلْمُ عُمَرَ ؓ » قَالَ سُلَيْمَانُ فَذَكَرْتُهُ فَقَالَ لَقَدْ قَالَ عَبْدُ اللهِ أَفْضَلَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ قَالَ «إِنِّي لَأَظُنُّ عُمَرَ قَدْ ذَهَبَ بِتِسْعَةِ أَعْشَارِ الْعِلْمِ»

✧ ʿAbdullāh said, "By Allah, I think that if ʿUmar's knowledge were placed in one pan of a scale and the knowledge of the rest of the living people of the earth were placed in the other pan, ʿUmar's knowledge ؓ would outweigh it." Sulaymān said: I mentioned that, and he said, "ʿAbdullāh said something even better than that. He said, 'I think ʿUmar went away with nine-tenths of knowledge.'"
