✧ I went with a man to ʿAbdullāh, and found him standing in prayer while two men had flanked him. When he said the salutation, they asked him about a verse. He said to one of them, "Who taught you to recite?" He said, "ʿUmar." He said to the other, "Who taught you to recite?" He said, "Abū Ḥakīm"—or he said "Abū ʿAmrah." He said, "Recite as ʿUmar taught you." Then he wept until his tears soaked the pebbles. Then he said, "ʿUmar ؓ was a strong fortress for Islam: people entered Islam and did not leave it. When ʿUmar was struck, the fortress was breached."
