حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُسْلِمٍ الْكَشِّيُّ ثنا عَمْرُو بْنُ حَكَّامٍ ثنا شُعْبَةُ عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ الْهَجَرِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي الْأَحْوَصِ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ قَالَ

«كُنَّا نُسَمِّي الْإِمَّعَةَ فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ الرَّجُلُ يُدْعَى إِلَى الطَّعَامِ فَيَتْبَعُهُ الرَّجُلُ وَهُوَ الْيَوْمَ الَّذِي يَحْقِبُ النَّاسَ دِينَهُ وَكُنَّا نُسَمِّي الْعَضَهَ السِّحْرَ وَهُوَ الْيَوْمَ قِيلَ وَقَالَ»

✧ “In the Age of Ignorance we used to call the immaʿa a man who is invited to food and another man follows him. Today it is the one who makes his religion a mount for people. And we used to call slander sorcery; today it is ‘it was said and he said.’”
