حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ حِبَّانَ الْمَازِنِيُّ ثنا عَمْرُو بْنُ مَرْزُوقٍ أَنَا شُعْبَةُ عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا الْأَحْوَصِ وَأَبَا الْكِنْدِيِّ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ قَالَ

«إِنَّكُمْ فِي زَمَانٍ الصَّلَاةُ فِيهِ طَوِيلَةٌ وَالْخُطْبَةُ فِيهِ قَصِيرَةٌ وَعُلَمَاؤُهُ كَثِيرٌ وَخُطَبَاؤُهُ قَلِيلٌ وَسَيَأْتِي عَلَيْكُمْ زَمَانٌ الصَّلَاةُ فِيهِ قَصِيرَةٌ وَالْخُطْبَةُ فِيهِ طَوِيلَةٌ خُطَبَاؤُهُ كَثِيرٌ وَعُلَمَاؤُهُ قَلِيلٌ يُأَخِّرُونَ الصَّلَاةَ صَلَاةَ الْعِشَاءِ إِلَى شَرْقِ الْمَوْتَى فَمَنْ أَدْرَكَ ذَلِكَ مِنْكُمْ فَلْيُصَلِّ الصَّلَاةَ لِوَقْتِهَا وَلْيَجْعَلْهَا مَعَهُمْ تَطَوُّعًا إِنَّكُمْ فِي زَمَانٍ يُغْبَطُ الرَّجُلُ فِيهِ عَلَى كَثْرَةِ مَالِهِ وَكَثْرَةِ عِيَالِهِ وَسَيَأْتِي عَلَيْكُمْ زَمَانٌ يُغْبَطُ الرَّجُلُ فِيهِ عَلَى قِلَّةِ عِيَالِهِ وَخِفَّةِ حَادِّهِ مَا أَدَعُ بَعْدِي فِي أَهْلِي أَحَبَّ إِلَيَّ مَوْتًا مِنْهُمْ وَلَا أَهْلَ بَيْتٍ مِنَ الْجِعْلَانِ وَإِنِّي لَأُحِبُّهُمْ كَمَا يُحِبُّونَ أَهْلِيكُمْ»

✧ "You are in a time in which the prayer is long and the sermon is short, and its scholars are many and its orators are few. And a time will come upon you in which the prayer is short and the sermon is long, its orators are many and its scholars are few. They will delay the ʿIsha prayer until the rising of the dead (i.e., very late). Whoever of you reaches that should pray the prayer at its proper time and make it with them as a supererogatory prayer. You are in a time in which a man is envied for the abundance of his wealth and the abundance of his dependents. And a time will come upon you in which a man is envied for the fewness of his dependents and the lightness of his burden. I do not leave behind in my family anyone dearer to me than their death, nor any household among the beetles. And indeed I love them as they love your families."
