حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ ثنا أَبُو نُعَيْمٍ ثنا سُفْيَانُ عَنْ أَبِي قَيْسٍ الْأَوْدِيِّ عَنْ هُزَيْلِ بْنِ شُرَحْبِيلَ قَالَ قَالَ

عَبْدُ اللهِ مَنْ أَرَادَ الْآخِرَةَ أَضَرَّ بِالدُّنْيَا وَمَنْ أَرَادَ الدُّنْيَا أَضَرَّ بِالْآخِرَةِ وَأَمَرَهُمْ أَنْ يَضُرُّوا بِالْفَانِي لِلْبَاقِي وَقَالَ إِنَّكُمْ فِي زَمَانٍ كَثِيرٌ عُلَمَاؤُهُ قَلِيلٌ خُطَبَاؤُهُ وَكَثِيرٌ مُعْطُوهُ قَلِيلٌ سُؤَّالُهُ فَأَطِيلُوا الصَّلَاةَ وَاقْصُرُوا الْخُطْبَةَ وَإِنَّ مِنَ الْبَيَانِ سِحْرًا وَإِنَّ مِنْ بَعْدِكُمْ زَمَانًا كَثِيرٌ خُطَبَاؤُهُ قَلِيلٌ عُلَمَاؤُهُ كَثِيرٌ سُؤَّالُهُ قَلِيلٌ مُعْطُوهُ

Translation

✧ ʿAbd Allah said: "Whoever desires the Hereafter harms his worldly life, and whoever desires the worldly life harms his Hereafter." And he commanded them to harm the perishable for the sake of the enduring. And he said: "You are in a time in which its scholars are many and its orators are few, and its givers are many and its beggars are few. So lengthen the prayer and shorten the sermon. And indeed some eloquence is magic. And after you will come a time in which its orators are many, its scholars are few, its beggars are many, and its givers are few."
