حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ زُهَيْرٍ التُّسْتَرِيُّ ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مَنْصُورٍ الطُّوسِيُّ ثنا شَبَابَةُ بْنُ سَوَّارٍ ثنا أَبُو بَكْرٍ الْهُذَلِيُّ ثنا أَبُو الْمَلِيحِ ثنا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ

دُفِعْتُ يَوْمَ بَدْرٍ إِلَى أَبِي جَهْلٍ وَقَدْ أُقْعِدْتُ فَأَخَذْتُ سَيْفَهُ فَضَرَبْتُ بِهِ رَأْسَهُ فَقَالَ رُوَيْعِينَا بِمَكَّةَ فَضَرَبْتُهُ بِسَيْفِهِ حَتَّى بَرُدَ ثُمَّ أَتَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَتَلْتُ أَبَا جَهْلٍ فَقَالَ عَقِيلٌ وَهُوَ أَسِيرٌ عِنْدَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ كَذَبْتَ مَا قَتَلْتَهُ قَالَ قُلْتُ بَلْ أَنْتَ الْكَذَّابُ الْآثِمُ يَا عَدُوَّ اللهِ قَدْ وَاللهِ قَتَلْتُهُ قَالَ فَمَا عَلَامَتُهُ؟ قُلْتُ بِفَخِذِهِ حَلْقَةٌ كَحَلْقَةِ الْجَمَلِ الْمُلْحِقِ قَالَ صَدَقْتَ

✧ At the Battle of Badr I was pushed toward Abu Jahl, and I had been seated. I took his sword and struck his head with it. He said, “Our little shepherd in Makkah.” I struck him with his sword until he became cold. Then I came to the Prophet and said, “O Messenger of God, I have killed Abu Jahl.” ʿAqil, who was a captive with the Prophet ﷺ, said, “You lie; you did not kill him.” I said, “Rather you are the liar and the sinner, O enemy of God. By God, I have killed him.” He said, “What is his distinguishing mark?” I said, “On his thigh there is a ring like the ring of a hobbled camel.” He said, “You have spoken the truth.”
