حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَضْرَمِيُّ ثنا مَعْمَرُ بْنُ بَكَّارٍ السَّعْدِيُّ ثنا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي بَكْرَةَ عَنِ الْأَسْوَدِ بْنِ سَرِيعٍ التَّمِيمِيِّ قَالَ
قَدِمْتُ عَلَى نَبِيِّ اللهِ ﷺ فَقُلْتُ يَا نَبِيَّ اللهِ إِنِّي قُلْتُ شِعْرًا أَثْنَيْتُ فِيهِ عَلَى اللهِ ﷻ وَمَدَحْتُكَ قَالَ «أَمَّا مَا أَثْنَيْتَ عَلَى اللهِ فَهَاتِهِ وَمَا مَدَحْتَنِي بِهِ فَدَعْهُ» فَجَعَلْتُ أُنْشِدُهُ فَدَخَلَ رَجُلٌ طُوَالٌ أَقْنَى فَقَالَ لِي «أَمْسِكْ» فَلَمَّا خَرَجَ قَالَ «هَاتِ» فَجَعَلْتُ أُنْشِدُهُ فَلَمْ أَلْبَثْ أَنْ عَادَ فَقَالَ لِي «أَمْسِكْ» فَلَمَّا خَرَجَ قَالَ «هَاتِ» فَقُلْتُ مَنْ هَذَا يَا نَبِيَّ اللهِ الَّذِي دَخَلَ قُلْتَ أَمْسِكْ وَإِذَا خَرَجَ قُلْتَ هَاتِ؟ قَالَ «هَذَا عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ وَلَيْسَ مِنَ الْبَاطِلِ فِي شَيْءٍ»

✧ I came to the Prophet of God ﷺ and said, “O Prophet of God, I composed poetry in which I praised God ﷻ and praised you.” He said, “As for what you praised God with, bring it; and as for what you praised me with, leave it.” So I began to recite, and a tall, aquiline-nosed man entered, and he said to me, “Stop.” When he left, he said, “Go on.” So I resumed reciting, and before long he returned, and he said to me, “Stop.” When he left, he said, “Go on.” I said, “Who is this who entered, O Prophet of God, that you said ‘Stop,’ and when he left you said ‘Go on’?” He said, “This is Umar b. al-Khattab, and he has nothing to do with falsehood.”
