✧ O Commander of the Faithful, I left behind in Iraq a man dictating the codices from memory. ʿUmar ؓ became angry until his face reddened. ʿUmar said to him repeatedly, “Do you know what you are saying?” He said, “I only inform you of the truth.” ʿUmar ؓ said, “Who is he?” He said, “Ibn Umm ʿAbd.” He said, “He became calm until the anger left him, then he said: There is no one on the face of the earth more deserving of that than him. I will tell you about that. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stayed up one night in the house of Abu Bakr ؓ for some need until it became dark, then he returned walking between me and Abu Bakr until we reached the mosque, and there was a man from the Emigrants praying. He stood listening to his recitation. I and my companion did not know who he was. He said: When he had stood for a while, I said, “O Messenger of Allah, a man from the Emigrants is praying; if you would return, for it has become dark.” He said: He poked me, and the Prophet ﷺ kept listening to his recitation. He said: He bowed and prostrated, then sat supplicating, and the Prophet ﷺ began saying, “Ask, you shall be given; ask, you shall be given.” Neither I nor my companion knew who he was until we heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, “Whoever is pleased to recite the Quran fresh as it was revealed, let him recite as Ibn Umm ʿAbd recites.” He said: “That is when I and my companion learned who he was.” He said: “I went early to ʿAbdullah to give him the good news, and he said: Abu Bakr has preceded you. By Allah, I never vied with Abu Bakr for any good except that he preceded me.”
