حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَمْرِو بْنِ خَالِدٍ الْحَرَّانِيُّ ثنا أَبِي ثنا زُهَيْرٌ ثنا أَبُو إِسْحَاقَ سَمِعَ أَبَا عُبَيْدَةَ يَذْكُرُ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ خَرَجَ هُوَ وَأَبُو بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرُ ؓ كَانَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ ؓ دَعَاهُمْ فَخَرَجُوا مِنْ مَنْزِلِهِ إِلَى الْمَسْجِدِ مَسْجِدِ الْمَدِينَةِ وَفِيهِ عَبْدُ اللهِ قَائِمٌ يُصَلِّي وَيَقْرَأُ ثُمَّ جَلَسَ فَتَشَهَّدَ فَأَثْنَى عَلَى اللهِ بِمَا هُوَ أَهْلُهُ كَأَحْسَنِ مَا يُثْنِي رَجُلٌ وَصَلَّى عَلَى نَبِيِّهِ ﷺ ثُمَّ ابْتَهَلَ بِالدُّعَاءِ وَالنَّبِيُّ ﷺ يَقُولُ «سَلْ تُعْطَهْ» فَقَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ ؓ مَنْ هَذَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ؟ قَالَ «هَذَا عَبْدُ اللهِ ابْنُ أُمِّ عَبْدٍ فَمَنْ سَرَّهُ أَنْ يَقْرَأَ الْقُرْآنَ غَضًّا كَمَا أُنْزِلَ فَلْيَقْرَأْ كَمَا قَرَأَ ابْنُ أُمِّ عَبْدٍ» فَابْتَدَرَهُ أَبُو بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرُ ؓ فَسَبَقَهُ أَبُو بَكْرٍ ؓ فَذَكَرَ عُمَرُ أَنَّ أَبَا بَكْرٍ سَبَقَهُ قَالَ عُمَرُ «وَكَانَ سَبَّاقًا بِالْخَيْرَاتِ»

✧ The Prophet ﷺ went out with Abu Bakr and 'Umar ؓ. Abu Bakr ؓ had invited them, so they went out from his house to the mosque, the mosque of Madinah. 'Abdullah was standing in it, praying and reciting. Then he sat down, recited the testimony of faith, praised Allah as He deserves, with the best praise a man can offer, and sent blessings upon His Prophet ﷺ. Then he earnestly supplicated, while the Prophet ﷺ said: "Ask, and you will be given." Abu Bakr ؓ said: "Who is this, O Messenger of Allah?" He said: "This is 'Abdullah, the son of Umm 'Abd. Whoever would like to recite the Qur'an fresh as it was revealed, let him recite as Ibn Umm 'Abd recited." Abu Bakr and 'Umar ؓ hastened to him, and Abu Bakr ؓ beat him. 'Umar mentioned that Abu Bakr beat him. 'Umar said: "He was always first in good deeds."
