حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو خَلِيفَةَ الْفَضْلُ بْنُ الْحُبَابِ الْجُمَحِيُّ ثنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى بْنِ حُمَيْدٍ ثنا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ زَيْدٍ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ أَنَّ الضَّحَّاكَ بْنَ قَيْسٍ كَتَبَ إِلَى قَيْسِ بْنِ الْهَيْثَمِ حِينَ مَاتَ يَزِيدُ بْنُ مُعَاوِيَةَ سَلَامٌ عَلَيْكَ أَمَّا بَعْدُ فَإِنِّي
سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ «إِنَّ بَيْنَ يَدَيِ السَّاعَةِ فِتَنًا كَقِطَعِ اللَّيْلِ الْمُظْلِمِ فِتَنًا كَقِطَعِ الدُّخَانِ يَمُوتُ فِيهَا قَلْبُ الرَّجُلِ كَمَا يَمُوتُ بَدَنُهُ يُصْبِحُ الرَّجُلُ فِيهَا مُؤْمِنًا وَيُمْسِي كَافِرًا وَيُمْسِي مُؤْمِنًا وَيُصْبِحُ كَافِرًا يَبِيعُ فِيهَا أَقْوَامٌ أَخْلَاقَهُمْ وَدِينَهُمْ بِعَرَضٍ مِنَ الدُّنْيَا» وَإِنَّ يَزِيدَ بْنَ مُعَاوِيَةَ قَدْ مَاتَ وَأَنْتُمْ إِخْوَانُنَا وَأَشِقَّاؤُنَا فَلَا تَسْبِقُونَا بِشَيْءٍ حَتَّى نَخْتَارَ لِأَنْفُسِنَا

✧ I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: "Indeed before the Hour there will be tribulations like patches of a dark night, tribulations like patches of smoke. In them a man's heart will die just as his body dies. In them a man will wake up as a believer and end the day as a disbeliever, and he will end the day as a believer and wake up as a disbeliever. In them some people will sell their morals and their religion for a paltry gain of this world." And indeed Yazid b. Mu'awiya has died, and you are our brothers and our full brothers, so do not precede us with anything until we choose for ourselves.
