✧ While I was in Damascus, seventy heads of the Khawarij were brought and set up on the steps of Damascus. Abu Umamah, the Companion of the Messenger of God ﷺ, came, entered the mosque, and prayed as much as he wished. When he came out, he wept, then said: “Dogs of the people of the Fire.” God, exalted be He, says: {It is He who sent down upon you the Book, in which are verses that are precise; they are the mother of the Book, and others ambiguous. As for those in whose hearts is deviation, they follow what is ambiguous from it}. Then he recited: {On the day when faces will turn white and faces will turn black. As for those whose faces turn black: Have you disbelieved after your faith? Then taste the punishment for what you used to disbelieve}. “They are these.” I said: “O Abu Umamah, is this something you heard from the Messenger of God ﷺ or something you say by your own opinion?” He said: “Then I would be very bold. I heard it from the Messenger of God ﷺ not once, nor twice, nor three times,” until he reached seven.
