✧ During the Farewell Pilgrimage, the Prophet ﷺ stood, that day riding behind him al-Fadl b. Abbas on a camel, and said, “O people, take knowledge before knowledge is taken away and before knowledge is raised.” God, Exalted is He, had already revealed {O you who believe, do not ask about things which, if shown to you, would distress you} — the verse. We used to recall it often, and it kept us from asking him. So we went to a bedouin and bribed him with a cloak; he wrapped it around his head until I saw the edge of the cloak on his right eyebrow. Then we said, “Ask the Prophet ﷺ.” He said, “O Prophet of God, how will knowledge be raised from us while the scriptures are among us? We have learned from them and taught them to our women, our children, and our servants.” The Prophet ﷺ raised his head, his face flushed with anger, and said, “May your mother be bereft of you! These Jews and Christians have scriptures among them, yet they do not adhere to a single letter of what their prophets brought them. Verily, one way knowledge departs is that its people depart,” three times.
