✧ What brought you, O bald one? I said, 'Seeking knowledge.' He said, 'It has reached me that the angels lower their wings for the seeker of knowledge, pleased with what he does.' I said, 'Something about wiping over the leather socks has troubled me: have you memorized anything from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ regarding it?' He said, 'Yes, when we were on a journey or traveling, he commanded us not to remove our leather socks for three days except on account of major ritual impurity, but [we could wipe] from defecation, urine, and sleep.' I said, 'Have you memorized anything from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about love?' He said, 'Yes, we were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on such-and-such a journey when a man from the rear of the people called him in a loud voice—a coarse, rough Bedouin—and said, "O Muhammad, O Muhammad." The people said to him, "Stop, for you have been forbidden from this." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ answered him in a manner similar to his voice and said, "Here I am." He said, "A man who loves a people but has not yet joined them." He said, "A person is with the one he loves." He continued narrating to me until he told me that Allah ﷻ made a gate in the west whose width is a journey of seventy years for repentance; it will not be closed until the sun rises from its direction. That is the saying of Allah ﷻ: {On the day when some of the signs of your Lord come, no soul will benefit from its faith if it had not believed before or earned good through its faith.}
