✧ What brought you? I said: 'Seeking knowledge.' He said: 'Indeed the angels lower their wings for the seeker of knowledge, pleased with what he seeks.' He said: I said: 'It has been troubling my mind: wiping over the leather socks after defecation and urine. I was a man from among the Companions of the Messenger of God ﷺ, so I came to you to ask about that. Did you hear from him anything about it?' He said: 'Yes. He used to command us when we were traveling—or when we were travelers—not to remove our leather socks for three days and their nights, except due to major impurity, but not due to defecation, urine, or sleep.' I said: 'Did you hear him mention desire (passionate love)?' He said: 'Yes. While we were with him on a journey, a bedouin called out to him with a loud voice—or he said with a resonant voice; Ibn 'Uyaynah was unsure—saying: "O Muhammad!" He answered him in a similar manner to his speech, then said: «Stop!» The man said: "What do you think of a man who loves a people but has not joined them?" He said: «On the Day of Resurrection he will be with those whom he loves.»' He said: 'Then he continued narrating to us until he said: «There is a gate toward the west, the width of whose passage is a journey of seventy years. God opened it for repentance on the day He created the heavens and the earth, and He will not close it until the sun rises from that direction.»'
