حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ صَالِحِ بْنِ الْوَلِيدِ النَّرْسِيُّ ثنا أَبُو حَفْصٍ عَمْرُو بْنُ عَلِيٍّ ثنا سَلْمُ بْنُ قُتَيْبَةَ ثنا عُمَرُ بْنُ نَبْهَانَ حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو عِيسَى سَلَّامٌ ثنا صَفْوَانُ بْنُ الْمُعَطَّلِ قَالَ

خَرَجْنَا حُجَّاجًا فَلَمَّا كُنَّا بِالْعَرْجِ إِذَا نَحْنُ بِحَيَّةٍ تَضْطَرِبُ فَلَمْ يَلْبَثْ أَنْ مَاتَتْ فَأَخْرَجَ لَهَا رَجُلٌ مِنَّا خِرْقَةً مِنْ عُبَيَّةٍ لَهُ فَلَفَّهَا وَخَدَّ لَهَا فِي الْأَرْضِ ثُمَّ قَدِمْنَا مَكَّةَ فَإِنَّا لَبِالْمَسْجِدِ الْحَرَامِ إِذْ وَقَفَ عَلَيْنَا شَخَصٌ فَقَالَ أَيُّكُمْ صَاحِبُ عَمْرِو بْنِ جَابِرٍ؟ فَقُلْنَا مَا نَعْرِفُهُ قَالَ أَيُّكُمْ صَاحِبُ الْجَانِّ؟ قَالُوا هَذَا قَالَ أَمَا إِنَّهُ كَانَ آخِرَ التِّسْعَةِ مُؤْمِنًا الَّذِينَ أَتَوْا رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَسْتَمِعُونَ الْقُرْآنَ

✧ We set out as pilgrims. When we were at al-Arj, we came upon a snake writhing, and before long it died. A man among us took out a cloth from his 'ubayyah and wrapped it, and dug a trench for it in the ground. Then we arrived in Makkah, and while we were in the Sacred Mosque, a person stood before us and said: 'Which of you is the companion of Amr b. Jabir?' We said: 'We do not know him.' He said: 'Which of you is the companion of the jinni?' They said: 'This one.' He said: 'Indeed he was the last of the nine believers who came to the Messenger of God ﷺ to listen to the Quran.'
