حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ الدَّبَرِيُّ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّزَّاقِ عَنْ مَعْمَرٍ عَنْ ثَابِتٍ الْبُنَانِيِّ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي لَيْلَى عَنْ صُهَيْبٍ قَالَ

كَانَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ إِذَا صَلَّى الْعَصْرَ هَمَسَ وَالْهَمْسُ فِي قَوْلِ بَعْضِهِمْ يُحَرِّكُ شَفَتَيْهِ كَأَنَّهُ يَتَكَلَّمُ بِشَيْءٍ فَقِيلَ لَهُ يَا نَبِيَّ اللهِ إِنَّكَ إِذَا صَلَّيْتَ الْعَصْرَ هَمَسْتَ؟ فَقَالَ إِنَّ نَبِيًّا مِنَ الْأَنْبِيَاءِ كَانَ أَعْجَبَ بِأُمَّتِهِ فَقَالَ مَنْ يَقُومُ لِهَؤُلَاءِ؟ فَأَوْحَى الله ﷻ إِلَيْهِ أَنْ خَيِّرْهُمْ بَيْنَ أَنْ أَنْتَقِمَ مِنْهُمْ وَبَيْنَ أَنْ أُسَلِّطَ عَلَيْهِمْ عَدُوَّهُمْ فَاخْتَارُوا النِّقْمَةَ فَسَلَّطَ عَلَيْهِمُ الْمَوْتَ فَمَاتَ مِنْهُمْ فِي يَوْمٍ سَبْعُونَ أَلْفًا

✧ When the Prophet ﷺ prayed the afternoon prayer, he would murmur. The murmuring, according to some of them, meant that he moved his lips as if speaking something. It was said to him, 'O Prophet of God, when you pray the afternoon prayer, you murmur?' He replied, 'A prophet among the prophets was impressed with his nation and said, "Who will stand up for these?" So God ﷻ revealed to him to give them a choice between His taking revenge on them and His unleashing their enemy upon them. They chose the punishment, so death was unleashed upon them, and seventy thousand of them died in a single day.'
