✧ From the Prophet ﷺ that one day he said to Ali ؓ, “Who is the most wretched of the early peoples?” He said, “The one who hamstrung the she-camel, O Messenger of Allah.” He said, “You have spoken the truth. Then who is the most wretched of the later peoples?” He said, “I have no knowledge, O Messenger of Allah.” He said, “The one who will strike you on this,” and the Prophet ﷺ pointed with his hand to the crown of his head. Ali ؓ used to say to the people of Iraq, “By Allah, I wish that the most wretched of you would be sent and would dye this,” meaning his beard, “from this,” and he placed his hand on the front of his head. The wording is that of the hadith of Suwayd b. Sa’id; al-Hadrami said in his version, “and he pointed with his hand to the crown of his head.”
