✧ I set out during the truce that was between us and the Messenger of God ﷺ. While I was in Syria, a letter from the Messenger of God ﷺ was brought to Heraclius. Diḥyah al-Kalbī had brought it and handed it to the governor of Buṣrā, who handed it to Heraclius. Heraclius said, “Is there here a man from the people of this man who claims to be a prophet?” They said, “Yes.” So I was summoned along with a group of Quraysh, and we entered upon Heraclius. He seated us before him and said, “Which of you is closest in kinship to this man who claims to be a prophet?” Abū Sufyān said, “I said, ‘I am.’” So they seated me before him and seated my companions behind me. Then he called for his interpreter and said, “Tell them that I am going to ask about this man who claims to be a prophet. If he lies to me, then call him a liar.” Abū Sufyān said, “By God, were it not that lying would be reported of me, I would have lied.” Then he said to his interpreter, “Ask him how is his lineage among you?” I said, “He is among us of noble lineage.” He said, “Was any of his fathers a king?” I said, “No.” He said, “Did you ever accuse him of lying before he said what he said?” I said, “No.” He said, “Who follows him, the nobles of the people or their weak ones?” I said, “Rather their weak ones.” He said, “Are they increasing or decreasing?” I said, “Rather they are increasing.” He said, “Does anyone of them apostatize from his religion after entering it out of displeasure with it?” I said, “No.” He said, “Have you fought him?” I said, “Yes.” He said, “How was your fighting against him?” I said, “War between us and him alternates; he strikes us and we strike him.” He said, “Does he betray?” I said, “No, and we are with him in a truce, not knowing what he will do during it.” He said, “By God, I was not able to insert anything else into a word besides this.” He said, “Has anyone said this saying before him?” I said, “No.” He said to his interpreter, “Tell him: I asked you about his lineage, and you claimed that he is among you of noble lineage, and so are messengers sent among the noblest of their people. I asked you whether any of his fathers was a king, and you claimed not, so I said, had any of his fathers been a king, I would have said he is a man seeking the kingdom of his fathers. I asked you about his followers, whether they are their weak ones or their nobles, and you said rather their weak ones, and they are the followers of the messengers. I asked you whether you accused him of lying before he said what he said, and you claimed not, so I knew that he would not refrain from lying against people and then go and lie against God. I asked you whether anyone of them apostatizes from his religion after entering it out of displeasure with it, and you claimed not, and so is faith when it mingles with the joy of hearts. I asked you whether they increase or decrease, and you claimed that they increase, and so is faith until it is complete. I asked you whether you fought him, and you claimed that you fought him, and war between you and him alternates; he gains from you and you gain from him, and so are messengers tested, then the outcome is theirs. I asked you whether he betrays, and you claimed that he does not betray, and so messengers do not betray. I asked you whether anyone said this saying before him, and you claimed not, so I said, had anyone said this saying before him, I would have said a man following a saying said before him.” Then he said, “What does he command you?” I said, “He commands us to prayer, zakāh, maintaining ties, and chastity.” He said, “If what you say about him is true, he is a prophet. I knew that he was to emerge, but I did not think he would be from among you. If I knew I could reach him, I would love to meet him, and if I were with him, I would wash his feet. His dominion will surely reach what is beneath my feet.” Then he called for the letter of the Messenger of God ﷺ and read it. In it was: “In the name of God, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate. From Muḥammad, the Messenger of God ﷺ, to Heraclius, the great one of the Romans. Peace be upon those who follow guidance. To proceed: I call you with the call of Islam. Submit, and you will be safe. Submit, and God will give you your reward twice. If you turn away, then upon you is the sin of the Arīsiyyīn. And {O People of the Book, come to a word common between us and you} until His saying {that we are Muslims}.” When he finished reading the letter, voices rose around him and clamor increased, and we were ordered to leave. When we left, I said to my companions, “The affair of Ibn Abī Kabshah has become great. The king of the Banū al-Aṣfar fears him.” I remained convinced that the affair of the Messenger of God ﷺ would prevail until God brought Islam to me. Al-Zuhrī said: Heraclius summoned the nobles of the Romans and gathered them in a hall of his. He said, “O assembly of Romans, will you accept success and right guidance forever and that your kingdom remain firm?” They bolted like wild asses to the doors, but found them locked. Then he called them back: “I only tested your steadfastness in your religion. I have seen from you what pleases me.” So they prostrated to him and were pleased with him.
