✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ would say to his companions: "Has any of you seen a dream?" We would narrate to him whatever Allah willed we narrate. One morning he said: "Two came to me last night, or two came to me, and they sent me forth and told me: 'Go.' So I went with them. We came upon a man lying down, and another standing over him with a rock. He was bringing the rock down upon his head, smashing it. The rock rolled away, he followed it and took it, and did not return to him until his head was restored as it was. Then he returned to him and did the same as the first time. I said to them: 'Glory be to Allah, what is this?' They said to me: 'Go.' So we went on and came upon a man lying on his back, and another standing over him with an iron hook. He would come to one side of his face and tear his cheek to the back of his neck, then turn to the other side and do the same. He would not finish until that side was restored as it was, then he would return to it and do as he had done the first time. I said to them: 'Glory be to Allah, what are these two?' They said to me: 'Go.' So we went on and came upon a structure like a clay oven. I think he said we heard noise and voices. We looked into it and saw men and women naked, and flames came at them from below. When the flames came at them, they cried out. I said to them: 'Glory be to Allah, who are these?' They said to me: 'Go.' So we went on and came upon a river—I think he said red like blood—and in the river a man was swimming, and on the bank a man had gathered stones. The swimmer would swim as he swam, then come to the one with the stones, open his mouth, and the man would put a stone in it. Then he would go and swim, then return, and each time he returned he opened his mouth and received a stone. I said to them: 'What is this?' They said to me: 'Go.' So we went on and came upon a man of ugly appearance, the ugliest man you could see, with a fire that he was stoking and walking around. I said to them: 'What is this?' They said to me: 'Go, go.' So we went on and came to a lush meadow in which was every kind of spring herb, and in the middle of the meadow was a tall man whose head I could hardly see in the sky, and around him were the most numerous and most beautiful children I had ever seen. I said to them: 'Glory be to Allah, what is this and who are these?' They said to me: 'Go.' We reached a great tree, the greatest and most beautiful tree I had ever seen. They said to me: 'Climb it.' So we climbed and reached a city built of bricks of gold and bricks of silver. We came to the gate of the city and asked for it to be opened. It was opened and we entered. There we were met by men, half of whose form was the most beautiful you could see, and half the ugliest you could see. They said: 'Go and plunge into that river.' There was a river flowing across, its water like pure milk in whiteness. They went and plunged into it, then returned to us with the ugliness gone, and they were in the most beautiful form. They said to me: 'This is the Garden of Eden, and this is your abode.' My sight rose upward, and I saw a palace like a white cloud. They said: 'That is your abode.' I said to them: 'May Allah bless you both, let me enter it.' They said: 'Not now, but you will enter it.' I said: 'I have seen wonders since last night. What is this that I have seen?' They said: 'We will tell you. The first man whose head was smashed with the rock is a man who takes the Qur'an and sleeps through the prescribed prayers. The man whose cheek, eye, and nostril were torn to the back of his neck is a man who leaves his house and tells a lie that reaches the horizons. The naked men and women in the structure like an oven are the fornicators and adulteresses. The man swimming in the river and being fed stones is the eater of usury. The man of ugly appearance at the fire is Malik, the keeper of Hell. The man in the meadow is Ibrahim ﷺ. The children around him are every child born upon the natural disposition.' Some of the Muslims said: 'O Messenger of Allah, and the children of the polytheists?' He said: 'And the children of the polytheists. As for the people who were half beautiful and half ugly, they are people who mixed a righteous deed with an evil one, and Allah overlooked them.'"
