✧ A man said to me: "Shall I direct you to a man from the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?" I said: "Yes." He pointed to a man beside him. I said: "Who are you, may Allah have mercy on you?" He said: "I am Surraq." I said: "Glory be to Allah! It is not fitting that you be called by this name while you are a man from the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ." He said: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ named me Surraq, and I will never abandon that." I said: "Why did he name you Surraq?" He said: "A man from the desert came with two camels of his to sell them. I bought them from him and said to him: 'Go, so that I can pay you.' I entered my house and spent the price of the two camels on my needs, and I hid myself until I thought that the Bedouin had left. Then I went out, and there was the Bedouin still waiting. He seized me and brought me before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he told him the story. The Prophet ﷺ said: 'What made you do what you did?' I said: 'I spent their price on my needs, O Messenger of Allah.' He said: 'Then pay him.' I said: 'I do not have it.' He said: 'You are Surraq. Take him, O Bedouin, and sell him until you recover your right.' The people began to bargain for me, and he would turn to them and say: 'What do you want?' They said: 'We want to ransom him from you.' He said: 'By Allah, none of you is more in need of Allah than I am. Go, for I have freed you.'"
