حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ حَنْبَلٍ حَدَّثَنِي إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ أَبِي اللَّيْثِ ثنا الْأَشْجَعِيُّ عَنْ سُفْيَانَ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ إِسْحَاقَ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ عَنِ السَّائِبِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ قَالَ
«كَانَ الْأَذَانُ الْأَوَّلُ يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ إِذَا قَعَدَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ أَذَّنَ فَإِذَا نَزَلَ أَقَامَ فَكَانَ ذَلِكَ زَمَنَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ وزَمَنَ أَبِي بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرَ ؓ فَلَمَّا كَانَ عُثْمَانُ ؓ فَشَا النَّاسُ وَكَثُرُوا فَأَمَرَ مُؤَذِّنًا فَأَذَّنَ بِالزَّوْرَاءِ قَبْلَ خُرُوجُهِ»

✧ The first adhan on Friday during the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sat on the pulpit: he would call the adhan, and when he descended, he would make the iqamah. That was the practice in the time of the Prophet ﷺ and the time of Abu Bakr and ʿUmar ؓ. But when it was the time of ʿUthman ؓ, the people had spread out and become numerous, so he ordered a muezzin to call the adhan at al-Zawra' before he came out.
