حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ وَأَبُو مُسْلِمٍ الْكَشِّيُّ قَالَا ثنا حَجَّاجُ بْنُ الْمِنْهَالِ ثنا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ عَنِ الْحَجَّاجِ عَنْ عُمَيْرِ بْنِ سَعِيدٍ عَنْ سَبْرَةَ بْنِ أَبِي سَبْرَةَ

أَنَّ أَبَاهُ أَتَى النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَقَالَ «مَا وَلَدُكَ؟» قَالَ عَبْدُ الْعُزَّى وَسَبْرَةُ وَالْحَارِثُ فَقَالَ «لَا تُسَمِّ عَبْدَ الْعُزَّى» فَسَمَّاهُ عَبْدَ اللهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ «إِنَّ خَيْرَ الْأَسْمَاءِ عَبْدُ اللهِ وَعَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ» وَدَعَا لَهُ وَلِوَلَدِهِ فَلَمْ يَزَالُوا فِي شَرَفٍ إِلَى الْيَوْمِ قَالَ أَبُو مُحَمَّدٍ الْحَجَّاجُ بْنُ الْمِنْهَالِ خَيْثَمَةُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ مِنْهُمْ

✧ That his father came to the Prophet ﷺ, and he asked: “What are your children’s names?” He said: “ʿAbd al-ʿUzzā, Sabrah, and al-Ḥārith.” He said: “Do not name him ʿAbd al-ʿUzzā,” and he named him ʿAbd God. Then he said: “The best of names are ʿAbd God and ʿAbd al-Raḥmān.” And he supplicated for him and for his children, and they have remained in honor to this day. Abū Muḥammad al-Ḥajjāj b. al-Minhāl said: Khaythamah b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān is one of them.
