حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَلِيِّ بْنِ شُعَيْبٍ السِّمْسَارُ وَالْحَسَنُ بْنُ بِشْرٍ الْبَجَلِيُّ ثنا الْمُعَافَى بْنُ عِمْرَانَ عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ حَسَّانَ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سِيرِينَ عَنْ سَوَادِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو الْأَنْصَارِيِّ قَالَ
قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنِّي رَجُلٌ حُبِّبَ إِلَيَّ الْجَمَالُ وَأُعْطِيتُ مِنْهُ مَا تَرَى فَمَا أُحِبُّ أَنْ يَفُوقَنِي أَحَدٌ فِي شِسْعِ نَعْلِي أَوْ قَالَ شِرَاكِ نَعْلِي أَفَمِنَ الْكِبْرِ ذَاكَ؟ قَالَ «لَا» قُلْتُ فَمَا الْكِبْرُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ؟ قَالَ «مَنْ سَفِهَ الْحَقَّ وَغَمَصَ النَّاسَ»

✧ I said, "O messenger of Allah, I am a man to whom beauty has been made beloved, and I was given of it what you see, so I do not love for anyone to surpass me in the strap of my sandal" or he said "the lace of my sandal. Is that from arrogance?" He said, "No." I said, "Then what is arrogance, O messenger of Allah?" He said, "Whoever rejects the truth and despises people."
