حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ ثنا أَبُو نُعَيْمٍ ثنا الْمَسْعُودِيُّ عَنْ عَاصِمٍ عَنْ شَقِيقٍ عَنِ الْأَشْعَثِ بْنِ قَيْسٍ قَالَ

فِيَّ نَزَلَتْ هَذِهِ الْآيَةُ كَانَ بَيْنِي وَبَيْنَ رَجُلٍ تَدَارٍ فِي مَالٍ أَوْ أَرْضٍ فَأَتَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَذَكَرْتُ ذَلِكَ لَهُ فَقَالَ «لَكَ بَيِّنَةٌ؟» فَقُلْتُ لَا قَالَ «فَسَيُسْتَحْلَفُ صَاحِبُكَ» قَالَ إِذًا يَحْلِفُ فَنَزَلَتْ هَذِهِ الْآيَةُ {إِنَّ الَّذِينَ يَشْتَرُونَ بِعَهْدِ اللهِ وَأَيْمَانِهِمْ ثَمَنًا قَلِيلًا} إِلَى آخِرِ الْآيَةِ

Translation

✧ This verse was revealed concerning me. There was a dispute between me and a man over some property or land. I went to the Messenger of God ﷺ and mentioned that to him. He said, 'Do you have proof?' I said, 'No.' He said, 'Then your opponent will be made to swear.' I said, 'Then he will swear.' So this verse was revealed: {Indeed, those who purchase with the covenant of God and their oaths a small price...} to the end of the verse.
