حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو خَلِيفَةَ ثنا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ أَبِي سُوَيْدٍ ثنا أَبُو عَوَانَةَ عَنِ الْأَعْمَشِ عَنْ أَبِي وَائِلٍ عَنِ الْأَشْعَثِ بْنِ قَيْسٍ قَالَ

فِيَّ أُنْزِلَتْ هَذِهِ الْآيَةُ كَانَتْ لِي أَرْضٌ فِي يَدِ عَمٍّ لِي فَأَتَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ «بَيِّنَتُكَ أَوْ يَمِينُهُ» قُلْتُ يَحْلِفُ إِذًا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «مَنْ حَلَفَ عَلَى يَمِينٍ صَبْرٍ يَقْتَطِعُ بِهَا مَالَ امْرِئٍ مُسْلِمٍ وَهُوَ فِيهَا فَاجِرٌ لَقِيَ اللهَ ﷻ وَهُوَ عَلَيْهِ غَضْبَانُ» فَأَنْزَلَ اللهُ ﷻ الْآيَةَ {إِنَّ الَّذِينَ يَشْتَرُونَ بِعَهْدِ اللهِ وَأَيْمَانِهِمْ ثَمَنًا قَلِيلًا} إِلَى آخِرِ الْآيَةِ

Translation

✧ In this verse, it was revealed to me that I had a piece of land in the possession of my paternal uncle. So, I went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he said, "Do you want me to arbitrate or shall I uphold his oath?" I said, "If he has taken an oath, then you should arbitrate, O Messenger of Allah." So, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever takes an oath, while he is still a sinner and uses it to wrongfully take the wealth of a Muslim, he will meet Allah while He is angry with him." So, Allah revealed the verse: "Indeed, those who exchange the covenant of Allah and their [own] oaths for a small price..." until the end of the verse.
