✧ When the Prophet ﷺ became gravely ill, and Aishah and Hafsah were with him, Ali ؓ entered. When he saw him, he raised his head and said, "Draw near to me." So he leaned against him and remained with him until he ﷺ passed away. When he died, Ali ؓ rose and locked the door. Al-Abbas ؓ came with the Banu Abd al-Muttalib and stood at the door. Ali ؓ began to say, "May my father be ransomed for you, pure in life and pure in death." A sweet fragrance spread that they had never smelled the like of before. Ali ؓ said, "Let al-Fadl b. Abbas enter to me." The Ansar said, "We adjure you by Allah concerning our share of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ." So they brought in a man from among them called Aws b. Khawli, carrying a water jar in one of his hands. They heard a voice in the house: "Do not strip the Messenger of Allah ﷺ; wash him as he is in his shirt." So Ali ؓ washed him, inserting his hand beneath the shirt while al-Fadl held the cloth away from him, and the Ansari poured the water. On Ali's ؓ hand there was a cloth, and he inserted his hand.
