حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى الْحُلْوَانِيُّ ثنا مُصْعَبُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ الزُّبَيْرِيُّ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي عَنْ قُدَامَةَ بْنِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ حَاطِبٍ الْجُمَحِيِّ قَالَ
حَضَرْتُ الْحَجَّاجَ بْنَ يُوسُفَ يَضْرِبُ عَبَّاسَ بْنَ سَهْلِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ السَّاعِدِيَّ فِي أَمْرِ ابْنِ الزُّبَيْرِ فَطَلَعَ أَبُوهُ سَهْلٌ فِي إِزَارٍ وَرِدَاءٍ لَهُ فَصَاحَ بِالْحَجَّاجِ أَلَا تَحْفَظُ فِينَا وَصِيَّةَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ؟ فَقَالَ وَمَا أَوْصَى بِهِ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فِيكُمْ؟ قَالَ «أَوْصَى أَنْ يُحْسَنَ إِلَى مُحْسِنِ الْأَنْصَارِ وَيُعْفَى عَنْ مُسِيئِهِمْ» فَأَرْسَلَهُ

✧ I attended al-Hajjaj ibn Yusuf beating Abbas ibn Sahl ibn Sa‘d al-Sa‘idi concerning the affair of Ibn al-Zubayr. His father Sahl appeared in his waist-wrapper and cloak, and shouted at al-Hajjaj, “Do you not remember the injunction of the Messenger of God ﷺ concerning us?” He said, “What did the Messenger of God ﷺ enjoin concerning you?” He said, “He enjoined that good be done to the good-doer of the Ansar, and that pardon be granted to their wrongdoer.” So he released him.
