حَدَّثَنَا فُضَيْلُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الْمَلْطِيُّ ثنا أَبُو نُعَيْمٍ ثنا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ الطَّائِفِيُّ ح وَحَدَّثَنَا مُعَاذُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى حَدَّثَنَا مُسَدَّدٌ ثنا قُرَّانُ بْنُ تَمَّامٍ ح وَحَدَّثَنَا الْحُسَيْنُ إِسْحَاقُ التُّسْتَرِيُّ ثنا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ ثنا وَكِيعٌ قَالَا ثنا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ يَعْلَى الطَّائِفِيُّ عَنْ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ أَوْسٍ الثَّقَفِيُّ عَنْ جَدِّهِ أَوْسِ بْنِ حُذَيْفَةَ قَالَ
قَدِمْنَا عَلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ وَفْدَ ثَقِيفٍ فَأُنْزِلْنَا عَلَيْهِ فِي قُبَّةٍ لَهُ فَنَزَلَ إِخْوَانُنَا مِنَ الْأَحْلَافِ عَلَى الْمُغِيرَةِ بْنِ شُعْبَةَ فَكَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَأْتِينَا بَعْدَ الْعِشَاءِ فَيُحَدِّثُنَا وَكَانَ أَكْثَرُ حَدِيثِهِ تَشْكِيَةَ قُرَيْشٍ وَيَقُولُ «وَلَا سَوَاءٌ كُنَّا بِمَكَّةَ مُسْتَذَلَّينَ مُسْتَضْعَفِينَ فَلَمَّا أَتَيْنَا الْمَدِينَةَ كَانَتِ الْحَرْبُ سِجَالًا عَلَيْنَا وَلَنَا» فَأَبْطَأَ عَلَيْنَا ذَاتَ لَيْلَةٍ فَأَطْوَلَ فَقُلْنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ لَقَدْ أَبْطَأْتَ فَقَالَ «إِنَّهُ طَرَأَ عَلَيَّ حِزْبِي مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ فَكَرِهْتُ أَنْ أَخْرُجَ حَتَّى أَقْضِيَهُ» فَسَأَلْنَا أَصْحَابَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ كَيْفَ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يُحَزِّبُ الْقُرْآنَ؟ فَقَالُوا كَانَ يُحَزِّبُهُ ثَلَاثًا وَخَمْسًا وَسَبْعًا وَتِسْعًا وَإِحْدَى عَشْرَةَ وَثَلَاثَ عَشْرَةَ وَحِزْبَ الْمُفَصَّلِ

✧ We came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ as a delegation of Thaqīf, and we were lodged with him in a tent of his. Our brothers from the allies lodged with al-Mughīrah b. Shuʿbah. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to come to us after the evening prayer and talk to us, and most of his talk was complaining about the Quraysh. He would say, 'It is not equal: we were in Makkah despised and oppressed, but when we came to Madinah, the war was alternately for us and against us.' One night he was late in coming to us and stayed away long, so we said, 'O Messenger of Allah, you have been late.' He said, 'A portion of the Qur'an came upon me, and I disliked to go out until I had completed it.' We asked the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, 'How did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ divide the Qur'an into portions?' They said, 'He divided it into threes, fives, sevens, nines, elevens, thirteens, and the portion of the Mufaṣṣal.'
